Benchmarks: Gun Metal 2, 3DMark2001SE

Gun Metal 2 Source: Yeti Studio

Gun Metal 2 is one of the first games that will be taking advantage of DirectX 9 technology. According to Gun Metal 2, 2x AA is enabled by default on all videocards and the listed framerates are average.

Our last DirectX9 Benchmark, Gunmetal 2 again saw the 5950 pull in top numbers, this time a decent 4 fps advantage over the Radeon 9800 Pro. Unfortunately it showed very little improvement in performance over its sibling, the FX5900 which in our lab tests managed just over 31 frames per second.

Interestingly, the change between 1024X768 and 1600X1200 demo runs seemed to make very little difference to the card, as the gap between it and the Radeon 9800 Pro stayed constant, as did the ones between the stock Gigabyte FX5950 Ultra numbers and the overclocked benchmarks.

By combining DirectX8 support with completely new graphics, it continues to provide good overall system benchmarks. 3DMark2001SE has been created in cooperation with the major 3D accelerator and processor manufacturers to provide a reliable set of diagnostic tools. The suite demonstrates 3D gaming performance by using real-world gaming technology to test a system's true performance abilities. Tests include: DirectX8 Vertex Shaders, Pixel Shaders and Point Sprites, DOT3 and Environment Mapped Bump Mapping, support for Full Scene Anti-aliasing and Texture Compression and two game tests using Ipion real-time physics.

Higher numbers denote better performance.

7. Gigabyte FX5950 Ultra 17799
8. Gigabyte FX5950 Ultra (516/1020) 18265

As you can see, the FX5950's scores in 3Dmark 2001's directX 8.1 environment pale next to those of the equivalent ATI cards. Whether this is a driver issue or a limitation of the chip itself is not known. The Gigabyte FX5950 Ultra core showed a visible, but not overly impressive performance rise over the FX5900.
