Final Fantasy XI Benchmark Demo Source: SQUARE ENIX

As far as modern games go, Final Fantasy XI isn't incredibly demanding. However, it is perhaps one of the best looking massively multiple online role playing games currently available. The performance metric published by Square Enix runs through a number of scenes compiled using characters and environments from the game itself in a given time span. The end result is a measure of the number of frames successfully rendered.

With anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering enabled, the results persist. Both of ATI's cards perform better than nVidia's best efforts, scoring four percent better, in the case of the X800 XT, and 24 percent in the case of the 9800 XT.

Unreal Tournament 2004 Source:Epic

Unreal Tournament 2004 is the sequel to 2003's multiple 'Game of the Year' award winner. It uses the very latest Unreal Engine technology - where graphics, sound and game play are taken beyond the bleeding edge. Unreal Tournament 2004 employs the use of Vertex as well as Pixel Shaders and it's recommended that you use a DirectX 8.1 videocard to get the most out of the game.

Hot on the heels of Unreal Tournament 2003, Unreal Tournament 2004 incorporates the same frantic running and shooting that really taxes graphics hardware. Nevertheless, the latest generation of video cards powers right through the game at every resolution right up to 1600x1200. The nVidia 6800 Ultra reigns supreme until the resolution hits 1600x1200, then the Radeon X800 XT manages a 6 FPS lead.

The situation begins unraveling for the nVidia 6800 Ultra videocard with the application of anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering. At 1024x768, the Radeon X800 XT commands a 13 percent lead. At 1280x1024 the lead increases to 22 percent, and it holds steady at 1600x1200. The older Radeon 9800 XT does similarly well, leaving the Geforce FX 5950 Ultra in the dust, although it doesn't boast the horsepower necessary for completely fluid frame rates.
