Maximum DDR2 Overclock Speeds, Timings and Conclusions

It's great to see how individual memory stacks up against the competition under stock configurations, but we're also going to show how it compares when overclocked. With performance in mind, we're going to compare the maximum overclocked results of the various DDR2 DIMMs we've tested in the past and are listed below. Remember, just because memory is clocked fast doesn't mean it's the best thing for a computer. Timings are also important and getting the right ratio of both is the key!

PDP Systems Patriot PC-4200 DDR2 XBL 4-3-3-12 672 MHz
PQI Turbo PQI25400-1GDB 4-4-4-12 660 MHz
Corsair Twin2X1024-4300C3 3-3-3-8 653 MHz
Mushkin PC2-4200 4-4-4-12 614 MHz
Crucial Ballistix PC2-5400* 3-3-3-9 575 MHz
Crucial PC2-4200* 3-3-3-9 575 MHz
Samsung PC2-4200* 3-3-3-9 575 MHz

* - Will be retested in the future with new BIOS that doesn't limit motherboard clock speed to 216 MHz.

The Corsair Twin2X1024-4300C3 memory overclocks well for PC4300 memory. Keep in mind that this memory is running more aggressively than any other DDR2 DIMM we've tested in the past which means performance is actually better than DIMMs clocked higher that use loose timings. It looks like Corsair lives up to its reputation yet again!

When looking for DDR-2, aim for the fastest kit!

With DDR already running about as fast as it can go, it will only be a matter of time before the advantages of DDR-2 memory actually become apparent. Intel has already increased its Pentium 4 bus speeds well beyond the levels that DDR memory can cope with. AMD, while still using DDR memory, is scheduled to adopt DDR-2 RAM in 2005. So it seems inevitable that DDR2 will eventually replace its predecessor. Corsair's Twin2X1024-4300C3 DDR2 memory modules live up to the Corsair reputation; at stock speeds performing solidly for the most part, and when overclocked performing exceptionally well.

The numbers from the Corsair memory benchmarks were in line with what the Crucial Ballistix PC2-5400 and PQI Turbo PQI25400-GBDB achieved. Not bad considering these are some of the fastest DIMMs on the market. For overclocking, hitting 653 MHz with 3-3-3-8 memory timings is mighty impressive, and nothing else we've used has reached these speeds with those timings.

With a retail price of $454 CDN ($368 US) for the pair of 512MB modules, the Corsair Twin2X1024-4300C3 memory is expensive, but then again so is all DDR2 memory right now. Considering Corsair's established customer service reputation (and lifetime warranty), the Twin2X1024-4300C3 is well worth the sticker price I think.
