Sony E400 19inch Monitor Review
Sony E400 19inch Monitor Review - PCSTATS
Worried that your Frag-rate in QIII is slipping? Might be time to upgrade that old 15" or 17" monitor to a bigger one. Sony makes some amazing stuff, but are their monitors really that good?

Conclusion and Ratings

The Sony E400 is a really nice monitor, however the price and lack luster performance (seemingly anyway) at 1600*1200 is disheartening. Then again, Sony has never been a "value" leader, and their displays are always of high quality. It's hard to finger out a single one of Sony's competitors that have such a high quality display in their "low-end" solutions. Although the price difference between Viewsonic's "E" line and Sony's "E" line is around $150 CAD ($103USD) you can see the obvious difference in quality between the two.

Does the Sony E400 deserve my recommendation? It unfortunately does not. While the Sony E400 is definately the BEST looking "value" line monitor that has ever seen the light of day. BUT Sony is charging you a lot more for their "value" line, than their competitors are for their "professional" line of monitors. I would recommend the KDS AV195TF if you must have a FD Trinitron CRT. I recommend the Samsung 900NF if you want a quality Dynaflat AG monitor. Ultimately I can only recommend the E400 for people that MUST get a Sony monitor (remember this is the most reasonably priced Sony monitor of all time.)

Ratings (Scale of Ten):

Price 7.5 Yes it's high, but it's SONY, so it's not that bad at all.
Image Quality: 9 I love everything that I see on this display, web surfing is a joy, viewing pictures is a pleasure, games are even more enjoyable than before.
Sharpness: 8 Everything is razor sharp, even at the furthest edges, but only a .22 FD Trinitron would deserve a 10.

Refresh Rates: 8 1280*1024 @ 85hz is superb, but 1600*1200 @ 75hz is disappointing.
Aesthetics: 9 Virtually flat screen, and the depth of the monitor is deceptive, it's quite short for a Trinitron. The Menu controls are easy to use too.
Intangibles: 8 3 year warranty, the included Mac adapter [yah that means A LOT to me.]
Overall: 8.5

For the overall rating, I disregard the price because, I feel that the overall rating should focus more on the satisfaction that the display brings to the user, and 8.5 is fair enough for a monitor that looks so flawless at 1280*1024 and below.
