Unreal Tournament 2004

Unreal Tournament 2004 is the sequel to the highly popular UT2003 and uses the very latest Unreal Engine technology. Unreal Tournament 2004 employs the use of Vertex and Pixel Shaders and it's recommended that you use a DirectX 9 videocard if you plan to play competitively.

Reversing the trend again, the K8N4-E Deluxe gives an extremely respectable performance in UT2004, nipping at the heels of some of the 4000+-equipped boards.

Doom 3

Source: id Software

Doom 3 is the most advanced game to date. it takes advantage of the latest videocard technology and pushes the processing power of the CPU to its absolute limit. At its highest setting, Ultra quality, texture sizes pass the 500MB mark which means even tomorrow's videocards will have a hard time running everything. The frame rates in the game itself are locked at 60 fps so anything above that point is wasted. Each test is run three times with the third run being recorded.

Doom 3 framerates are also very nice. The K8N4-E Deluxe is obviously at its best when handling today's hot games, which is a good thing.

An excellent upgrade for those with an older system?

Without support for PCI Express, it is hard for any platform to make in this day and age. The nForce4 chipset has breathed a lot of new life (and legitimacy) into the motherboard industry, AMD systems, Intel systems, and even the socket 754 Athlon64 processor as it nears EOL. Early adopters now have a real PCI Express alternative to upgrade to, without having to purchase a whole new processor. Heck, for anyone who wants to put together a low budget system based on the AMD Sempron, now you don't have to sacrifice videocard upgradeability!

The Socket 754-based Asus K8N4-E Deluxe is a great motherboard for its processor class, with a modest feature list and good overall performance. The board comes with an additional Serial ATA/RAID controller, Gigabit LAN, IEEE 1394a and a 7.1 channel AC'97 codec. The motherboard is user-friendly, something Asus has always been good with. As you've seen from the benchmarks on the previous pages, the Asus K8N4-E Deluxe is no performance slouch despite the slower processor and single channel memory handicap native to the socket 754 platform.

nForce4 motherboards have always been good at overclocking and the Asus K8N4-E Deluxe does not disappoint; 262 MHz from a Socket 754 motherboard is very respectable and we probably could have gone higher had Asus included some sort of chipset voltage adjustment.

With a retail price of $142 CDN ($115 US), the Asus K8N4-E Deluxe is an good upgrade option for current Socket 754 Athlon64 users who don't want to break the bank. AMD has officially announced the end of life (EOL) of the socket 754 platform, so there isn't too much life left here, but at least the final days of this CPU formfactor can take full advantage of PCI Express, extending its useful lifetime a little further.
