Underclocked Benchmarks: 3DMark 2001SE, 3DMark2005

By combining DirectX8 support with completely new graphics, 3DMark 2001 SE continues to provide a good overall system benchmark. 3DMark2001 SE was created in co-operation with the major 3D accelerator and processor manufacturers to provide a reliable set of diagnostic tools. The suite demonstrates 3D gaming performance by using real-world gaming technology to test a system's true abilities. Tests include: DirectX8 Vertex Shaders, Pixel Shaders and Point Sprites, DOT3 and Environment Mapped Bump Mapping, support for Full Scene Anti-aliasing and Texture Compression and two game tests using Ipion real-time physics. Higher 3DMark scores denote better performance.

Performance in 3Dmark2001SE drops sharply at the lowest speeds, but overall the benchmark shows a fairly smooth decline in performance. Even at 1GHz below its rated speed, the 4000+ chip still flirts with 20K, which is quite impressive. At a third of the processor's stock speed, performance in 3Dmark2001SE drops by a little over half.

3DMark05 is the latest version of the highly favoured 3DMark graphics benchmarking series. It is the first benchmark to require DirectX®9.0 compliant hardware with support for Pixel Shader 2.0 or higher.

It's no surprise that the 3DMark2005 overall score remains high throughout the test, since this benchmark is much more dependent on the video card than the processor. The CPU rating plunges as expected, with the 800MHz score ending up a fair bit under half that of the stock speed score. The large 500 point drop between 1.4 and 1.3GHZ is notable.
