Benchmarks: 3DMark2001, 3DMark05

3DMark2001 Source: FutureMark

By combining DirectX8 support with completely new graphics, 3DMark2001 SE continues to provide good overall system benchmarks. 3DMark2001 SE has been created in cooperation with the major 3D accelerator and processor manufacturers to provide a reliable set of diagnostic tools. The suite demonstrates 3D gaming performance by using real-world gaming technology to test a system's true performance abilities. Tests include: DirectX8 Vertex Shaders, Pixel Shaders and Point Sprites, DOT3 and Environment Mapped Bump Mapping, support for Full Scene Anti-aliasing and Texture Compression and two game tests using Ipion real-time physics. Higher 3DMark scores denote better performance.

3DMark2001SE Benchmark Results
Processors: Points Ranking
Pentium 4 540 23249
Athlon64 3800+ 27002
Athlon64 4000+ 28265
Athlon64 X2 4800+ 28501
Athlon64 X2 4800+ 64-bit 27166
Pentium D 840 22295
Pentium D 840 (4.02GHz) 25093
Pentium D 840 64-bit 21531

The first gaming benchmark went rather poorly for both dual-core processors, though the Athlon64 X2 4800+ still bested the Intel Pentium D 840 by over 8000 points. Dual-core operation obviously has no advantages in this older gaming benchmark, and we're willing to bet that the higher memory bandwidth of the single core systems gives them an advantage here.

3DMark05 is the latest version of the highly favoured 3DMark series. It is the first benchmark to require a DirectX®9.0 compliant hardware with support for Pixel Shaders 2.0 or higher! Higher numbers are better.

Overall: Points Ranking
Pentium 4 540 5231
Athlon64 3800+ 4996
Athlon64 4000+ 5579
Athlon64 X2 4800+ 5592
Athlon64 X2 4800+ 64-bit 5916
Pentium D 840 5593
Pentium D 840 (4.02GHz) 5753
Pentium D 840 64-bit 5744
CPU: Points Ranking
Pentium 4 540 4963
Athlon64 3800+ 4876
Athlon64 4000+ 5110
Athlon64 X2 4800+ 6347
Athlon64 X2 4800+ 64-bit 7263
Pentium D 840 5879
Pentium D 840 (4.02GHz) 5960
Pentium D 840 64-bit 5728

Interestingly, both 64-bit operation and dual-core seem to benefit the newer 3DMark05, though the Intel Pentium D 840 receives much more of a dual-core boost over its single-core sibling than the Athlon64 X2 4800+ does. Both dual-core processors post impressive scores. Overclocking makes little difference to the Pentium D 840's performance.
