Benchmarks: Comanche 4, UT2003

Comanche 4 Source: Novalogic

The Comanche 4 benchmark demo is a unique benchmark as it represents a real-world gaming experience. It contains the single player "Eagle's Talon" mission from the game as well as a detailed cinematic. This DirectX 8.1 benchmark demo will measure your system's performance in the standard frames per second format. The benchmark was run with audio disabled. Higher numbers are better.

Comanche 4 Benchmark Results
640x480 Points Ranking
Pentium 4 540 59.44
Athlon64 3800+ 76.13
Athlon64 4000+ 82.03
Athlon64 X2 4800+ 80.84
Athlon64 X2 4800+ 64-bit 82.79
Pentium D 840 57.88
Pentium D 840 (4.02GHz) 69.02
Pentium D 840 64-bit 58.93

The Intel Pentium D 840 does poorly on this benchmark, falling behind even the Pentium 4 540. If I had to speculate why, I'd guess memory bandwidth on the 955X Express board was the culprit. Overclocking the processor goes a long way towards rectifying the deficit.

Unreal Tournament 2003

Source: Epic

Unreal Tournament 2003 is the sequel to 1999's multiple 'Game of the Year' award winner. It uses the very latest Unreal Engine technology - where graphics, sound and game play are taken beyond the bleeding edge. Unreal Tournament 2003 employs the use of Vertex as well as Pixel Shaders and it's recommended that you use a DirectX 8 videocard to get the most out of the game. Higher numbers are better.

UT2003 Benchmark Results
640x480 Flyby: Points Ranking
Pentium 4 540 262.87
Athlon64 3800+ 333.29
Athlon64 4000+ 361.62
Athlon64 X2 4800+ 364.53
Athlon64 X2 4800+ 64-bit 352.74
Pentium D 840 256.23
Pentium D 840 (4.02GHz) 296.7
Pentium D 840 64-bit 252.95
640x480 Botmatch: Points Ranking
Pentium 4 540 85.45
Athlon64 3800+ 106.91
Athlon64 4000+ 114.12
Athlon64 X2 4800+ 113.77
Athlon64 X2 4800+ 64-bit 110.97
Pentium D 840 84.9
Pentium D 840 (4.02GHz) 98.43
Pentium D 840 64-bit 83.83

Again, the Intel Pentium D 840 fails to keep up in the gaming benchmarks, falling behind the AMD processors to the tune of over a hundred FPS in the flyby test. Overclocking gives a reasonable boost to the processor's abilities.
