Pure 32-Bit Benchmarks: Doom 3, Quake 4, Halo

Doom 3

Source: id Software

Doom 3 is the most advanced OpenGL game to date. It takes advantage of the latest videocard technology and pushes the processing power of the CPU to its absolute limits. At its highest setting, Ultra quality, texture sizes pass the 500MB mark which means even tomorrow's videocards will have a hard time running everything. The frame rates in the game itself are locked at 60 fps so anything above that point is wasted. Each test is run three times and with the third run being recorded.

Doom 3:
LQ 640x480: FPS Ranking
Intel Pentium D 840 97.5
AMD Athlon64 FX-60 160.1
AMD Athlon64 FX-60 @ 2.88 GHz 178.14
HQ 1024x768: FPS Ranking
Intel Pentium D 840 94.3
AMD Athlon64 FX-60 159.3
AMD Athlon64 FX-60 @ 2.88 GHz 165.22

The AMD Athlon64 FX-60 walks all over the Intel Pentium D 840 in Doom 3.... all this while drawing less electrical power to do it.

Quake 4

Source: id Software

Quake 4 is the latest shooter from ID and is based on the Doom 3 engine. Tweaked to for more eye candy, Quake 4 promises to be tougher on videocards and systems than its predecessor was. Quake 4 also does not have a 60 fps limiter like Doom 3, with the Ultra setting, graphic textures can surpass the 500MB mark!

Quake 4
LQ 640x480: FPS Ranking
Intel Pentium D 840 67.45
AMD Athlon64 FX-60 91.25
AMD Athlon64 FX-60 @ 2.88 GHz 94.74
HQ 1024x768: FPS Ranking
Intel Pentium D 840 63.14
AMD Athlon64 FX-60 90.46
AMD Athlon64 FX-60 @ 2.88 GHz 93.55

The results are much closer in Quake 4, however the Athlon64 FX-60 produces frame rates which are 26% faster at stock speeds.

Halo Source: Bungie

The game tells the tale of Master Chief, the last surviving Spartan -- a genetically enhanced breed of future super soldier, as he battles mankind's greatest threat -- the Covenant. Released in 2003, Halo is Microsoft/Bungie's first person shooter classic. The game takes advantage of DirectX 9 shaders as well as Pixel Shader 2.0.

Halo:
640x480: FPS Ranking
Intel Pentium D 840 135.22
AMD Athlon64 FX-60 168.51
AMD Athlon64 FX-60 @ 2.88 GHz 176.14
1024x768: FPS Ranking
Intel Pentium D 840 119.61
AMD Athlon64 FX-60 163.44
AMD Athlon64 FX-60 @ 2.88 GHz 172.36

We're starting to see a trend here, the AMD Athlon64 FX-60 produces results which are in general about 20-30% faster than the Intel Pentium D 840 in most games. That's a huge competitive advantage for gamers who need every last frame.
