Pure 32-Bit Benchmarks: PCMark04, PCMark05

Futuremark Mark04 Source: FutureMark

PCMark04 is the latest version of the popular PCMark series. PCMark04 is an application-based benchmark and a premium tool for measuring overall PC performance. It uses portions of real applications instead of including very large applications or using specifically created code. This allows PCMark04 to be a smaller installation as well as to report very accurate results.

Futuremark PCMark04:
Overall Points Ranking
Intel Pentium D 840 6760
AMD Athlon64 X2 4800+ 7037
AMD Athlon64 FX-60 7580
AMD Athlon64 FX-60 @ 2.88 GHz 8114
CPU Points Ranking
Intel Pentium D 840 6486
AMD Athlon64 X2 4800+ 6806
AMD Athlon64 FX-60 7329
AMD Athlon64 FX-60 @ 2.88 GHz 8001
Memory Points Ranking
Intel Pentium D 840 5344
AMD Athlon64 X2 4800+ 5468
AMD Athlon64 FX-60 5605
AMD Athlon64 FX-60 @ 2.88 GHz 5970

PCMark04 is Symmetric Multiprocessing (SMP) compatible so both cores of each dual core chip are being stressed. In this results sheet there is little doubt which processor is fastest. The Athlon64 FX's CPU score is particularly impressive for a stock system, and you almost have to wonder if there is anything faster on the consumer market...

PCMark05 is a premium tool for measuring both normal home use and simple 3D performance of the latest PC hardware. There are 11 system tests - each one is designed to represent a certain type of PC usage. By running these tests, PCMark05 stresses the components in a similar manner as they are stressed in normal home usage.

Futuremark PCMark05:
Overall Points Ranking
Intel Pentium D 840 5732
AMD Athlon64 X2 4800+ 4212
AMD Athlon64 FX-60 4416
AMD Athlon64 FX-60 @ 2.88 GHz 4847
CPU Points Ranking
Intel Pentium D 840 5309
AMD Athlon64 X2 4800+ 4944
AMD Athlon64 FX-60 5179
AMD Athlon64 FX-60 @ 2.88 GHz 5974
Memory Points Ranking
Intel Pentium D 840 4201
AMD Athlon64 X2 4800+ 4087
AMD Athlon64 FX-60 4216
AMD Athlon64 FX-60 @ 2.88 GHz 4674

It's certainly interesting to see the Intel Pentium D 840 storm ahead to take the lead in PCMark05 while both dual core Athlon64 processors fall to the rear. Generally speaking, the processor and memory scores are much closer in this benchmark. Overclocking the FX-60 to 2.88GHz pushes it ahead in two out of three of the tests.
