Seagate Backup Plus Slim External USB 3.0 2TB Hard Drive Review

Intel Pentium D 940 3.2GHz Dual Core Processor Review

Intel Pentium D 940 3.2GHz Dual Core Processor Review - PCSTATS
Abstract: Built on Intel's 65 nanometer manufacturing process and with two physical processing cores running at 3.2 GHz each, backed up by 2MB of L2 cache, the socket 775 chip certainly makes quite a splash.

Multi-Threaded Benchmarks: 3DMark05

3DMark05 - Multi-Threaded Tests Source: FutureMark

3DMark05 is best suited for the latest generation of DirectX9.0 graphics cards. It is the first benchmark to require a DirectX9.0 compliant hardware with support for Pixel Shaders 2.0 or higher! By combining high quality 3D tests, CPU tests, feature tests, image quality tools, and much more, 3DMark05 is a premium benchmark for evaluating the latest generation of gaming hardware. Prime95 was running in the background to simulate load on a one core.

Prime95 + 3DMark05
Overall: Points Ranking
Intel Pentium D 840 7974
AMD Athlon64 4000+ 7718
AMD Athlon64 FX-60 11456
AMD Athlon64 X2 5000+ 7753
AMD Athlon64 FX-62 7846
Intel Pentium D 940 7269
Intel Pentium D 940 (Overclocked to 4.4 GHz) 7812
CPU: Points Ranking
Intel Pentium D 840 2186
AMD Athlon64 4000+ 5149
AMD Athlon64 FX-60 2546
AMD Athlon64 X2 5000+ 6447
AMD Athlon64 FX-62 6356
Intel Pentium D 940 4847
Intel Pentium D 940 (Overclocked to 4.4 GHz) 5431

Multi-threaded tests mean the benchmark is taking advantage of one core while Prime95 is being tasked to the second, so in effect both cores of the dual core processors in this reference list are being taxed. Looking at the overall score for 3DMark05 we aren't seeing much of a change between each CPU model. The CPU portion of this test takes a big hit under multi-threaded loads. The Intel Pentium D 940 does not suffer as much as the Pentium D 840 does when one core is running under a Prime95 load.
