AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition 3.4 GHz Socket AM3 Processor Review

AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition 3.4 GHz Socket AM3 Processor Review - PCSTATS
Abstract: AMD's 3.4GHz Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition processor represents a slight clock speed increase over the previous forerunner, the quad-core 955 Black Edition, and competes with Intel's existing quad-core family of socket 775 CPUs.

32-Bit CPU Calculation Benchmarks: Super Pi, wPrime2.0

Super Pi Mod 1.5 Source: SuperPI

SuperPI calculates the number PI to 1 Million digits in this raw number crunching benchmark. The benchmark is fairly diverse and allows the user to change the number of digits of PI that can be calculated from 16 Thousand to 32 Million. The benchmark, which uses 19 iterations in the test, is set 1 Million digits.

Lower calculation times are better. SuperPi is not multi-threaded.

The Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition is the best of the AMD processors tested in SuperPi at this point, but none of these processors can keep up with Intel's Core i7 or Core 2 Duo microprocessors. Remember, SuperPi is not multi-threaded and lower times are best.

wPrime 2.0 Source: WPrime

wPrime uses a recursive call of Newton's method for estimating functions, with f(x)=x2-k, where k is the number we're sqrting, until Sgn(f(x)/f'(x)) does not equal that of the previous iteration, starting with an estimation of k/2. It then uses an iterative calling of the estimation method a set amount of times to increase the accuracy of the results. It then confirms that n(k)2=k to ensure the calculation was correct. It repeats this for all numbers from 1 to the requested maximum.

Lower calculation times are better. wPrime is multi-threaded.

wPrime 2.0 is a great multi-threaded benchmark for testing the number crunching capabilities of a processor. It fills in where SuperPi leaves off, and allows us to stress one core, or any number of cores up to the total amount in the processor. The CPUs benchmarked here range from two to four cores, so the most important result set to pay attention to is the final block (all threads).

While the 3.4GHz AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition processor is easily able to bear the Intel Core i7 920 when both processors are using four threads at a time, the Intel processor also runs in HyperThreading mode, which lets it crunch eight threads simultaneously and achieve the best results overall. Comparatively speaking, the 3.4GHz Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition edges out a slight advantage over the 3.2GHz Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition CPU across the board.
