AMD Phenom II X4 975 Black Edition 3.6 GHz Socket AM3 Processor Review - PCSTATS
AMD's Phenom II X4 975 Black Edition is a quad-core, 3.6GHz socket AM3 chip with 6MB of L3 cache and 512KB of L2 cache per core. It's being released in tandem with the AMD Phenom II X4 840 CPU. Both processors are ideally suited to socket AM3 motherboards built around the recent AMD 890FX or 890GX chipsets.

CPU Rendering Benchmarks: POV-Ray 3.7

POV-Ray 3.7 Beta 30 Source: POV-RAY

Ray-tracing is a rendering technique that calculates an image of a scene by simulating the way rays of light travel in the real world. In the real world, rays of light are emitted from a light source and illuminate objects. The light reflects off of the objects or passes through transparent objects. This reflected light hits our eyes or perhaps a camera lens. Because the vast majority of rays never hit an observer, it would take forever to trace a scene. Ray-tracing programs like POV-Ray start with their simulated camera and trace rays backwards out into the scene. The user specifies the location of the camera, light sources, and objects as well as the surface texture properties of objects, their interiors (if transparent) and any atmospheric media such as fog, haze, or fire.

Lower render times are better, however higher Pixel Per Second rendering values are best. Pov-ray is multi-threaded.

The 3.6GHz quad-core AMD Phenom II X4 975 Black Edition CPU does very well in POV-Ray with a render time of 88.45 seconds and an average render rate of 2963 pixels per second.

Six-core Phenom II X6 processors top the chart with the best results in this multi-threaded benchmark. POV-ray tends to favour AMD processors, which just goes to show that it's important to know if advantages exist in the applications you use everyday for one family of processor or the other. (Sometimes they do.)

Next up, 3DMark 06 and Vantage synthetic gaming benchmarks.
