Abstract: AMD's Phenom II X4 975 Black Edition is a quad-core, 3.6GHz socket AM3 chip with 6MB of L3 cache and 512KB of L2 cache per core. It's being released in tandem with the AMD Phenom II X4 840 CPU. Both processors are ideally suited to socket AM3 motherboards built around the recent AMD 890FX or 890GX chipsets.

3DMark06 is the worldwide standard in advanced 3D game performance benchmarking. A fundamental tool for every company in the PC industry as well as PC users and gamers, 3DMark06 uses advanced real-time 3D game workloads to measure PC performance using a suite of DirectX 9 3D graphics tests, CPU tests, and 3D feature tests. 3DMark06 tests include all new HDR/SM3.0 graphics tests, SM2.0 graphics tests, AI and physics driven single and multiple cores or processor CPU tests and a collection of comprehensive feature tests to reliably measure next generation gaming performance today.

3DMark06 doesn't stress multiple cores as well as 3DMark Vantage does, but the AMD Phenom II X4 975 Black Edition still pulls ahead because of its high clock speed. More games are starting to take advantage of quad-core processors, although performance is still almost entirely dictated by the videocard(s).

In the CPU portion of this benchmark, Phenom II X4 975 Black Edition chip scores 4996 vs. the Intel Core i5 750's result of 4140.

Focusing on the CPU results only, the AMD Phenom II X4 975 Black Edition scores well (12258) but remains behind the six-core Phenom II X6 processors and Intel Core i5/i7 chips.

Pay close attention to the standing of the Phenom II X4 840 which has no L3 cache - it struggles to compete with the other quad-core chips in this benchmark. Last but not least we move onto the Crysis and FEAR benchmark sets.
