Benchmarks: QIII Arena

Quake III Arena

Source: ID Software

Quake III Arena is a First Person Shooter (FPS) that revolutionized gaming as we know it. Using multiple light sources and having graphics textures that can fill videocards, even after 3 years it's still able to bring a cutting edge system to its knees.

Quake III Arena Fastest demo001 (SYSTEM)
Processor FPS Ranking
1.

P4 2.66 GHz (133/333)

370.6
2. P4 3.46 GHz (173/434)

2. P4 3.46 GHz (173/434) 134

Some people out there complain about Quake III because it's a relatively old program, but despite it's age it's still a good measurement of system performance. We get about a 20% performance boost in both demo001 and nv15demo when running in the fastest settings. Everyone knows that at the fastest settings we're all system limited so let's turn up the resolution a bit.

Quake III Arena Max 1024x768 demo001 (SYSTEM)
Processor FPS Ranking
1.

P4 2.66 GHz (133/333)

291.6
2. P4 3.46 GHz (173/434)

Processor FPS Ranking
1.

P4 2.66 GHz (133/333)

68
2. P4 3.46 GHz (173/434) 88.3

With everything set to maximum and a resolution of 1024x768, in demo001 we get about just over a 15% boost thanks to system overclocking.

Quake III Arena MAX 1600x1200 demo001
Video Card FPS Ranking
1.

P4 2.66 GHz (133/333)

177.3
2. P4 3.46 GHz (173/434) 178.1

Quake III Arena MAX 1600x1200 nv15demo
Video Card FPS Ranking
1.

P4 2.66 GHz (133/333)

67.6
2. P4 3.46 GHz (173/434) 87.1

At 1600x1200 the videocard becomes the bottleneck of the system, that's why the demo001 framerates are almost identical, I guess it's time to overclock the videocard! ;-) In the more CPU intensive nv15demo the difference is still over 20%, something one should keep in mind if they're playing games which are mainly CPU limited.
