HDD Benchmarks: PCMark Vantage

FutureMark PCMark Vantage 1.0.0.0 - HDD Test Source: FutureMark

PCMark Vantage is the first objective hardware performance benchmark for PCs running 32 and 64 bit versions of Windows Vista. PCMark Vantage is perfectly suited for benchmarking any type of Windows Vista PC from multi media home entertainment systems and laptops to dedicated workstations and hi-end gaming rigs. Regardless of whether the benchmarker is an artist or an IT Professional, PCMark Vantage shows the user where their system soars or falls flat, and how to get the most performance possible out of their hardware. PCMark Vantage is easy enough for even the most casual enthusiast to use yet supports in-depth, professional industry grade testing. Higher points are better.

On the whole, PCMark Vantage results position the 240GB Kingston SSDnow V300 SSD towards the top of the list. However, the results take a big dip in the 'Editing with Movie Maker' HDD sub-test; there the Kingston SSDnow V300 SSD does relatively poorly.

SSD is only 7mm thick, a plastic spacer increases this to 9.5mm

Quick, but unable to break away from the mainstream/commodity SSD crowd

As the benchmarks have illustrated, Kingston's SSDnow V300 SSD delivers great read/write speeds - up to 504MB/s Read and 298MB write in CrystalDiskMark - at a reasonable price of ~$214 USD/CDN for 240GB's worth of solid state storage.

The benchmarks also show that Kingston's SSDnow V300 SSD handles about the same as a Crucial M4 SATA III SSD, so this SSD fails to pull ahead from the mass of commoditized solid state drives on the market right now. That's not to suggest the Kingston's SSDnow V300 SSD isn't worth getting, in fact it provides good value for money, is very quick for mainstream computer applications, and unlike the SanDisk Extreme.... it doesn't squeal with "SSD noise". In other words, it's dead quiet. The SD Extreme SSD was nice and quick, but we have to admit that benchmarking systems with that SSD gives us a headache - the high pitched noise from the SSD is quite piercing after a few hours. Anyhow, this is besides the point, the Kingston SSDnow V300 didn't produce any audible electronic noise that we could discern.

To recap, Kingston's SSDnow V300 SSD is a 2.5" 240GB SSD that operates on a SATA III interface. The drive measures just 7mm thick, so a plastic spacer plate is supplied to bring that thickness up to 9.5mm for devices which require a snug fit. At a cost of about $0.89 per GB, it's dead center on value. The 240GB Kingston SSDnow V300 SSD is covered by a 3 year warranty and rated for 1.0M hours MTBF. A good value, sure, but not the fastest SSD out there.
