Disk Load Time: 1.08s 1.14s

During the CD-Speed data transfer tests, the CPU usage remained very low, not moving up past 10%, which is quite good. Disk eject and load times sat at 1.31sec and 1.08sec respectively. It took just under 8 seconds for the drive to recognize the test disk.

As with just about every CD-ROM, the actual average speed is always lower than the listed rate, which in this case saw speeds hovering around 24X . The SM-308 was very also quiet while in operation.

Audio benchmarks are in line with the data ones, although CPU usage does jump up slightly to 11%. Compared to the Samsung SW-216, the SM-308 illustrated slightly slower read times on the audio disk, and slower random seek times as well. The SW-216 is a 16-10-32 CDRW, so it does not naturally support the DVD format.

Nero DVD Speed 99 Benchmarks

Please note that most DVD-ROMs performed below their advertised maximum speed ratings. Generally the rated maximum speeds are lower during the benchmark portions of tests.

Samsung SM-308 DVD Tests

Nero DVD Speed 99 Benchmark
DVD Drive SM308
Disk Type DVD-Video
Avg Speed 3.67x
Random Seek Time 104ms
1/3 Seek Time 110ms
Full Seek Time 361ms
CPU use: 1X 14%
CPU use: MAX n/a

As you can tell from the scores, the SM308 drive performed about half the listed speed during our DVD Speed 99 test with the Matrix DVD. During the test, the SM-308 posed a 14% CPU utilization score, and some pretty good random seek times. The full seek time was longer than what we had hoped to see.
