GeIL PC3500 Dual Channel Memory Kit Review

GeIL PC3500 Dual Channel Memory Kit Review - PCSTATS
Abstract: Last year GeIL was a relatively unknown company in North America, and now they are certainly giving the "big guns" like Corsair and Mushkin a good run for the money in the performance segment.

Unreal Tournament 2003 Demo

Source: Epic

Unreal Tournament 2003 is the sequel to 1999's multiple 'Game of the Year' award winner. It uses the very latest Unreal Engine technology - where graphics, sound and gameplay are taken beyond the bleeding edge. Unreal Tournament 2003 employs the use of Vertex as well as Pixel Shaders and it's recommended that you use a DirectX 8 videocard to get the most out of the game.

The AMD based system does not get as large a performance boost from overclocking here with UT2003, but the Intel rig scales quite nicely. Of course this is mainly due to the much higher overall CPU speed.

Conclusions:

Even though the GeIL PC3500 DC memory are not the highest overclocking DIMM's we've ever tested, in terms of the price/performance ratio they're near the top. As you could see with an AMD based system we were able to push the memory to 208 MHz FSB while maintaining the most aggressive memory timings.

On SPD, we were easily able to run the memory at its rated 216 MHz on the Epox 8RGA+ but performance was lower due to the looser timings. The GeIL memory seemed to like our Intel test rig quite a bit, and we were able to hit a high of 452 MHz memory frequency while using the most aggressive memory timings.

With a retail price of $180 CDN ($120 US), the GeIL PC3500 DC memory kit is quite inexpensive for performance memory. As I mentioned earlier it is $75 CDN ($50 US) cheaper then Corsair's TwinX XMS3200 LL so there is hope yet for those budget overclockers out there! =)

I was a bit surprised to see the GeIL PC3500 memory used 5ns DRAM instead of the advertised 4.5 ns DRAM. Apparently our particular samples were using mislabelled DRAM...

If you're looking for better then average overclocking memory but are on a budget, GeIL is definitely an option you should consider.
