Benchmarks: PCMark04, 3DMark2001

PCMark04 Source: FutureMark

The latest version of the popular PCMark series, PCMark04 is an application-based benchmark and a premium tool for measuring overall PC performance. It uses portions of real applications instead of including whole applications or using specifically created code. This allows PCMark04 to maintain a smaller installation size while still giving accurate results.

It's nice to see that nVIDIA for Intel is the real deal. In PCMark04 the Gigabyte GA-8N-SLI Royal can hold its own against mature 925X/XE motherboards.

By combining DirectX8 support with completely new graphics, 3DMark 2001 SE continues to provide a good overall system benchmark. 3DMark2001 SE was created in co-operation with the major 3D accelerator and processor manufacturers to provide a reliable set of diagnostic tools. The suite demonstrates 3D gaming performance by using real-world gaming technology to test a system's true abilities. Tests include: DirectX8 Vertex Shaders, Pixel Shaders and Point Sprites, DOT3 and Environment Mapped Bump Mapping, support for Full Scene Anti-aliasing and Texture Compression and two game tests using Ipion real-time physics. Higher 3DMark scores denote better performance.

3DMark2001 is not very SLI friendly and here we see that using two GeForce 6600GTs doesn't do much. The Gigabyte GA-8N-SLI Royal still leads the Intel pack though.

Note that the AMD-based SLi setup (green bars) is using the much 'faster A64 4000+ chip, which explains the large performance differential. Note that by 'faster' we mean better, as the 2.4GHz Athlon64 is technically 'slower' than the 3.2GHz P4). These benchmarks are included to compare the benefits that AMD and Intel nForce 4 SLi systems receive from using dual videocards.
