Benchmarks: Doom 3, Conclusions

Doom 3

Source: id Software

Doom 3 takes advantage of the latest videocard technology and pushes the processing power of the CPU to its absolute limit. At its highest setting, Ultra quality, texture sizes pass the 500MB mark which means even tomorrow's videocards will have a hard time running everything. The frame rates in the game itself are locked at 60 fps so anything above that point is wasted. Each test is run three times with the third run being recorded.

As in the UT2004 benchmarks, the Foxconn WinFast 761GXK8MC-S's onboard video fails to complete the Doom 3 time demo run. There is still plenty of power in this small Foxconn package with a PCI Express videocard installed.

Experts Tip: CPU Stuck to the heatsink upon removal?
Pulling a processor out of the socket by its pins because the heatsink is firmly stuck on is not as uncommon as you might think. When removing a processor heatsink, it is always a good idea to pull up with a slight twisting action. Rectangular heatsinks have a little bit of wiggle room in the heatsink retention frame, and do so breaks the thermal paste bond between the heatsink and CPU. As soon as that loosens, the heatsink can be removed without yanking out the processor too. Doing so can damage the processor if it comes free of the socket at an angle and pins get bent.

On a budget, Integrated Graphics can Help

Performance of the Foxconn WinFast 761GXK8MC-S was pretty good overall, in office applications the board managed to keep up with much faster systems even though it was using a slower CPU. Things are quite different when it comes to gaming, since the integrated SIS Mirage 1 videocard is only DirectX 7 compatible. Gamers will definitely have to get something else. Once you find the perfect gaming card, upgrading is a snap thanks to the PCI Express x16 slot.

Unfortunately reputations are a difficult thing to get rid of and SiS's is not the best. Gone are the days of buggy/low performing chipsets, SiS can compete with the best on the market. Its 761GX chipset is a fine example of SiS engineering, and it is just as advanced as anything else on the market. Despite the handicap of using a Socket 754 Athlon64 3200+, the Foxconn 761GXK8MC-S which is based on the SiS 761GX performs on the whole quite well.

In workstation applications, the Foxconn WinFast 761GXK8MC-S is a bit slower than its dual channel DDR socket 939 based systems. Considering the price difference between the fastest and slowest systems though, the Foxconn WinFast 761GXK8MC-S certainly has a better bang for the buck ratio that makes it a useful option for general computer tasks. Gaming performance with a stand alone videocard is comparable to existing K8 chipsets.

Individuals looking to build a basic entry level workstation style PC should find the Foxconn WinFast 761GXK8MC-S an affordable solution. It's not the fastest board on the block, and we would highly suggest that its onboard graphics are forgone for an actual PCI Express videocard if the user has any desire to play games. Office applications, internet, and general PC tasks were handled by this microATX motherboard without any problems.
