Super Talent 2.5" Flash IDE 8GB Solid State Drive Review
Super Talent 2.5
SuperTalent's 8GB storage capacity will limit the applications of the FIDE-8GB Flash drive to compact WindowsXP installations, or better yet Linux.

Sandra is designed to test the theoretical power of a complete system as well as the individual components. The results are also purely theoretical and may not represent real world performance.

The 8GB SuperTalent IDE Flash Drive matches up pretty well against the 12GB IBM Travelstar Notebook HDD. Access times are very quick with both flash memory drives (the OCZ is used for comparison to see how flash memory stands up to flash memory) but we're a bit surprised to see bandwidth was on the low side. DMA was enabled and the latest nForce drivers were installed on the test platform based on a Albatron KM51PV-AM2 (GF 6150) motherboard.

HD Tach V3.0.1.0 Source: TCD Labs Inc.

HD Tach is a physical performance hard drive test for Windows 95/98/ME and Windows NT/2000. In Windows 9X/ME it uses a special kernel mode VXD to get maximum accuracy by bypassing the file system. A similar mechanism is used in Windows NT/2000/XP. HD Tach reads from areas all over the hard drive and reports an average speed. It also logs the read speeds to a text file that you can load into a spreadsheet and graph to visually read the results of the test.

In HD Tach we see that access time again is very quick for the flash memory hard drives, however bandwidth is a bit on the low side. It's interesting to see that bandwidth from the flash memory drives is very steady and does not fluctuate from test to test.

So where does all this leave us, is the 8GB Supertalent FIDE Flash Drive a good replacement for IDE notebook hard drives?
