Benchmarks: Super Pi, PCMark05

Super Pi Source: SuperPI

SuperPI calculates the number PI to 1 Million digits in this raw number crunching benchmark. The benchmark is fairly diverse and allows the user to change the number of digits of PI that can be calculated from 16 Thousand to 32 Million. The benchmark, which uses 19 iterations in the test, is set 1 Million digits.

Lower numbers denote faster calculation times (seconds), and hence, better performance.

Intel Pentium D 840 39
Intel Pentium D 940 40
AMD Athlon64 FX-62 31
AMD Athlon64 X2 5000+ 34
AMD Sempron 3600+ 42
Intel Pentium M 740 57

Super Pi times are rather disappointing, however bandwidth plays such a key role in Super Pi and these results are unsurprising given that the Pentium M 740 uses a single channel memory controller.

PCMark05 Source: FutureMark

PCMark05 is a premium tool for measuring both normal home use and simple 3D performance of the latest PC hardware. There are 11 system tests - each one is designed to represent a certain type of PC usage. By running these tests, PCMark05 stresses the components in a similar manner as they are stressed in normal home usage.

AMD Sempron 3600+ 3787
Intel Pentium M 740 2447

PCMark05's overall score is not particularly good, but there are many factors that come into play. The CPU section of the tests shows that the Pentium M 740 has almost the same CPU power as the Sempron 3600+. The memory test results also surprise as we would have expected numbers significantly slower due to the single channel memory controller.
