great to see how individual memory stacks up against the competition under stock
configurations, but we're also going to show how it compares when overclocked.
With performance in mind, we're going to compare the maximum overclocked results
of the various DDR-2 memory modules PCSTATS has tested in the past which are
listed below. Remember, just because memory is clocked fast doesn't mean it's
the best thing for a computer. Timings are also important, and getting the right
ratio of both is the real key to performance based overclocking!
Corsair DOMINATOR Twin2X2048-9136C5D is not designed for low latency use
(4-4-4-12) which is why it only does moderately well in the low latency testing.
High latency, high speed is where the DOMINATOR Twin2X2048-9136C5D shines, and
it's pretty darn fast! I think in this case the memory is being limited by the
motherboard, it could go faster...
Corsair's Smoking Fast Memory!
all DDR-2 memory comes with heatspreaders, unfortunately the parts were designed
for standards two generations old. In order to effectively cool DDR2 memory at
high temperatures the conventional heat spreader design is quickly loosing its
DOMINATOR Twin2X2048-9136C5D memory is a prime example of fresh thinking. Not
only has Corsair redesigned the heatspreaders, it's also redesigned the circuit
board. Much of the heat from the DDR2 BGA DRAM modules actually conducts through
the BGA DRAM solder balls to the circuit board below. With that in mind, Corsair
uses copper trace lines and thermal vias to move the heat to a heatsink
specifically for the PCB. This system allows the memory to run cooler than if it
were just using a conventional heatspreader.
Corsair DOMINATOR Twin2X2048-9136C5D is meant for overclockers, the memory
doesn't discriminate, the price tag does that for it. At $530 CDN ($459 US, £234
GBP) only hardcore overclockers with an nVidia nForce 680i based computer system
need apply. Simply saying that you get fast memory with the Corsair DOMINATOR
Twin2X2048-9136C5D is an understatement, I don't think there's anything faster
available at the moment.
speeds the Corsair DOMINATOR Twin2X2048-9136C5D performs very well, on par with
the other DDR2 memory that we've tested recently, but overclocking is this
tight 4-4-4-12 timings, the Corsair DOMINATOR Twin2X2048-9136C5D was able to reach
a respectable 1040 MHz. Loosening up the memory timings allowed the Corsair
memory to fly like no other before, hitting a staggering 1240 MHz with just
2.2V! I'm sure that those of you who are patient will be able to squeeze even
more out of the memory, it's just dying to be overclocked.
