Foxconn has forever
changed the motherboard landscape and it looks like it may be set to do the same
for videocards now. What better way for Foxconn to make an introduction than
with the hottest graphics core on the market at the moment, the nVidia GeForce
8800GTS 320MB. nVIDIA has put together an awesome package here.
It's the tweaking Foxconn has done to the
FV-N88SMCD2-ONOC that makes it special. The GeForce 8800GTS 320MB videocard is
already pretty darn fast by reference design, but by overclocking the core to
Geforce 8800GTX levels Foxconn has possibly the fastest GeForce 8800GTS 320MB
out on the market.
What makes the Foxconn card unique is its incredibly
high clock speeds. Both the core and memory are heavily overclocked, more so
than usual from a manufacturer. The GeForce 8800GTS core comes clocked at 575
MHz (as oppose to 500 MHz) and the memory hums along at 1800 MHz (instead of
1600 MHz). Best of all at $347 CDN ($300US, £152 GBP), the Foxconn
FV-N88SMCD2-ONOC is still one of the cheaper GeForce 8800GTS videocards on the
The Foxconn FV-N88SMCD2-ONOC videocard is
based entirely on the 'G80' reference design, not a surprise since most
manufacturers have gone this route. During testing the FV-N88SMCD2-ONOC was
extremely quiet even during high 3D load levels. That's great news for gamers
the FV-N88SMCD2-ONOC is not just fast, it's also quiet.
Instead of bundling games that get old and out of date,
Foxconn includes a swanky USB 3D game pad with the FV-N88SMCD2-ONOC videocard.
After trying it out in a few games, you know for "testing purposes" we all
agreed that the PS2 like controller added a new dimension to computer game play.
The game pad is especially fun to use with racing simulators and the analog
stick works great for making smooth turns.
In terms of 3D performance the Foxconn FV-N88SMCD2-ONOC
videocard handled itself nicely. The card duked it out with the GeForce 7950GX2
(which runs SLI by default) for second spot in all of the benchmarks that we
threw at it. Even when AA/AF is turned on, performance was still very high.
Even though the Foxconn FV-N88SMCD2-ONOC is already
heavily overclocked it was still able to do a bit more hitting a maximum core
speed of 650 MHz and a 2 GHz memory operating frequency! Overclocking did not do
much in most games, but in titles like Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, Doom 3 or
FEAR there was a noticeable boost in overall framerates.
Other videocard manufacturers better take notice,
Foxconn is ready to play whether they're ready or not. The Foxconn
FV-N88SMCD2-ONOC is an excellent videocard, comes with a strong package and best
of all has a competitive price. This is definitely good news for gamers and
