Asus EAH4850 HTDI/512M/A Radeon HD 4850 Videocard Review

Asus EAH4850 HTDI/512M/A Radeon HD 4850 Videocard Review - PCSTATS
Abstract: Its a good time to be on the market for a new video card. After floundering in second place behind nVidia for the past few years, ATI's Radeon 48xx-series videocards promise to boost AMDs marketshare back up to a healthy margins by delivering fast framerates for a very competitive price.

Crysis 1.2 - AA/AF Tests

Source: Electronic Arts

Crysis is a science fiction first-person shooter developed by Crytek. Crysis uses Microsoft's new API, DirectX 10 for graphics rendering, and includes the new engine—the CryEngine 2—that is the successor to Far Cry's CryEngine. CryEngine 2 is among the first engines to use the DirectX 10 framework of Windows Vista, but can also run using DirectX 9, both on Vista and Windows XP.

The Asus EAH4850 videocard exhibits some strange behaviour with 4xAA modes, seeming to prefer 8x modes instead. At these settings it's about as fast as a single 3870 X2, but only the Palit HD 4870 X2 can really manage playable settings at 1920x1200 with 8xAA.

Conclusions: HD 4850 is leaner, meaner and best of.... Cheaper!

Having intense competition in the mid-range sector produces some of the most exciting graphics cards to drool over. With the Asus EAH4850 we have a videocard that's had to pass through trial by enemy fire to be competitive in today's market.

The Radeon HD 4850 GPU is designed to be the economical member of the 48XX family, and it fills that role well. Costing about $200, it's not much more expensive than most midrange system components, making it easy to fit inside a sub-$1000 gaming PC.

In the benchmarks the Asus EAH4850 was often faster than the Radeon HD 3870 X2, without any of the driver profile malarky dealing with a multi-GPU setup often involves. nVidia's 9600GT barely holds its own even when paired in SLI, against the Asus EAH4850 graphics card.

Ultimately the Asus EAH4850 is an economical videocard with moderate overclocking capability for the gamer who wants to play the newest games at reasonable resolutions. There's not quite enough OC head room in it to turn it into a Radeon HD 4870 X2... but enough of a boost for a noticeable improvement when running Crysis at max image quality settings. Again, midrange videocards like the Radeon HD 4850 tend to be pretty good overclockers, usually sharing the same architecture as the high-end cards in the same family, but with lowered clock & memory speeds.

Really, the Asus EAH4850's closest competition comes in the form of nVidia's Geforce 9800 GTX+ and GTX 260 graphics cards - we're looking forward to running tests on them, so stay tuned to PCSTATS. Compared to some of last year's flagship cards and the fastest card money can buy now, the Asus EAH4850 has proven itself to be outstanding value for money.
