On the test bench today is Plextor's PX-B310U external Blu-ray drive. In addition to Blu-ray playback (but not burning), this full sized external ODD, which connects to the PC over USB2.0 cable, doubles up as a DVD and CD burner. The PX-B310U supports DVD reading and writing in both the + and - formats, as well as reading and writing to DVD-RAM and Dual-Layered DVD discs.

Benchmarks: CD Speed: CD-R/RW, DVD-ROM
Nero's CD Speed burn tests are done twice, once
with a CD-R disc rated to 1x-52x burn speed, and again with a CD-RW rated to
4x-32x. Each disc was test with the same files, about 640MB in size. This test
is performed by simply placing blank recording media into the burner and running
CD Speed. The software will detect if it is CD-R or CD-R/W media and run the
appropriate tests.

These
writing tests come out with some good numbers for the Plextor PX-B310U. It's the
fastest CD-R writer by a wide margin, and maintains decent performance as
a CD-RW as well.
Nero's CD Speed burn tests a DVD+RW rated to
2.4-4x. The disc is burned with files of about 4.7GB in size. This test is done
by simply placing the blank recording media into the burner and running CD
Speed. The software will detect the type of DVD media and run the appropriate
test.

The Plextor also has no problem smashing the other
drives in the DVD-RW writing test, where it's considerably faster than the rated
speeds for the media.
