ASUS EAH4770 FML/DI/512MD5/A Radeon HD 4770 Videocard Review

ASUS EAH4770 FML/DI/512MD5/A Radeon HD 4770 Videocard Review - PCSTATS
Abstract: Once the box is open it's clear Asus has made some big changes from the reference Radeon HD 4770, starting with the heatsink. Asus claims its new design will increase airflow volume and improve heat dispersion, but it's hard not to notice that the fan shroud resembles a Formula 1 racer.

AA/AF Videocard Benchmarks: Crysis, Farcry 2

Crysis 1.2 - AA/AF Tests

Source: Electronic Arts

Crysis is a science fiction first-person shooter developed by Crytek. Crysis uses Microsoft's new API, DirectX 10 for graphics rendering, and includes the new engine—the CryEngine 2—that is the successor to Far Cry's CryEngine. CryEngine 2 is among the first engines to use the DirectX 10 framework of Windows Vista, but can also run using DirectX 9, both on Vista and Windows XP.

At 1920 x 1200 resolution, the Asus EAH4770 FORMULA videocard begins to struggle considerably at 8xAA, and the Radeon HD 4850 is actually a little bit smoother at these settings. Bumping the resolution down to 1600 X 1200 (or 1680 x 1050 if you own an LCD) improves frame rates to playable levels, and puts the Asus EAH4770 FORMULA back on top.

Far Cry 2 - AA/AF Tests

Source: Ubisoft

Far Cry 2 takes place in a fictional modern-day East African nation in a state of anarchy and civil war. The player takes control of a mercenary on a lengthy journey to locate and assassinate 'the Jackal," a notorious arms dealer. Far Cry 2 has extensive benchmarking tests that can be configured to break down system performance in several ways.

Far Cry 2 is too much for the Asus EAH4770 FORMULA when IQ is maxed out. Turning down AA settings will recoup a lot of lost performance, with 1600 x 1200 and 4xAA being a good compromise. While the Geforce GTS 250 videocard does better in early DX10 games, mixing anti-aliasing with shader-intensive video games like Crysis and Far Cry 2 still run better on ATI Radeon videocards.

The performance numbers are pretty promising, but does this custom revision EAH4770 FORMULA really have what it takes?

ASUS Radeon HD 4770 - the best $150 videocard?

The Asus EAH4770 FORMULA videocard seems to have hit all the right notes. It's based on the Radeon HD 4770 GPU, which mixes the ATI RV740 GPU with a 40nm production process and GDDR5 memory. The Radeon HD 4700 GPU is clocked at 750MHz, the 512MB of GDDR5 memory runs at an even 3200MHz. With these specs it typically matches or exceeds the performance of the Radeon HD 4850 and Geforce GTS 250 videocards, both of which sell for around the same price.

However because the Asus EAH4770 FORMULA is built on a 40nm production process, it draws less power than either of its PCI Express x16 rivals. It's has the best performance-per-watt ratio of any videocard PCSTATS has tested thus far, another point in its favor.

With such a small power draw, the Radeon HD 4770 also generates less heat and noise than other videocards in its class. Asus has pushed this advantage even further with the EAH4770 FORMULA's new heatsink and fan design. Sure it may look like a race car, but it ran quietly in our test labs.

The low heat, noise and power means that the Radeon HD 4770 is a good contender for a Home Theatre PC, and the presence of an on-board HDMI output makes the Asus EAH4770 FORMULA even more compelling. Since this is an ATI Radeon HD videocard, it has an on-board audio codec, so it's dead simple to get output to an HDTV. Like all Radeon HD 4xxx series cards, there's also support for GPU videodecoding, so when plugged into an older PC the EAH4770 FORMULA should handle high-definition playback better than not.

PCSTATS overclocked the Asus EAH4770 FORMULA videocard effortlessly, pushing the GPU from 750MHz to 830MHz, and the 3200MHz GDDR5 memory up to 3400MHz. PCSTATS' overclocking was done using ATI's own Catalyst Control Center, which limits overclocking headroom to safe limits. For those who really want to push the Asus EAH4770 FORMULA as far as it can go, Rivatuner is a great way to tweak your videocard.

With a retail price of about $150 CDN ($130 USD, £80 GBP), the Asus EAH4770 FORMULA videocard is an excellent value for HTPC applications, or anywhere you want decent 3D gaming without spending a fortune, and built-in HDMI.
