Seagate 2TB Barracuda XT 6Gb/s SATA III Hard Drive Review - PCSTATS
Abstract: In this review PCSTATS will be testing out Seagate's 2TB, 6Gb/s SATA III Barracuda XT hard drive. This 3.5" desktop hard drive features an increased 64MB onboard cache where other 2TB drives only have 32MB and it supports Native Command Queing (NCQ).

HDD Benchmark: File Transfer & Conclusions

File Copying

For this test a single 8.5GB file is copied from an OCZ Vertex 2 SSD system disk to the test disk (write to), from the test disk to the OCZ Vertex 2 SSD (read from), and from the test disk to itself (read and write to self). While this test is heavily influenced by the SATA controller and by the number of files being transferred, it provides a good indication of the sustained transfer rates capable from the hard drive being tested. Higher transfer speeds are best.

A simple copying test in Windows Explorer illustrates the basic advantages this 2TB Seagate Barracuda XT drive brings to the table.

2 Terabytes of Sweet Sweet Drive Space

Hard drive capacity is always on the up and up, but the standards which enable the PC to access those Terabytes of data, such as IDE and SATA, change much less frequently. With the Barracuda XT Seagate inaugurated the era of SATA III storage devices.

What's notable about Seagate's desktop 2TB Barracuda XT hard drive is that it was the companies first 3.5" hard drive to support SATA-IO's Serial ATA 6Gb/s interface. The Barracuda XT is built around a four platter 7200RPM spindle, with ramp loading for the heads and 64MB of onboard cache.

Architecturally the Barracuda XT is quite similar to the Barracuda 7200.12, so evidently the bandwidth advances are coming by way of the XT's enlarged cache and shiny new SATA 6Gb/s hardware controller, rather than changes to its perpendicular magnetic recording technology.

As we saw in the benchmarks the 2TB Barracuda XT drive performed well compared to HDDs of similar capacity. On the price per GB front, the 2TB Barracuda will run $0.125/GB. While SSDs are markedly faster, at a cost of ~$1.58/GB (120GB) they are hardly large enough, nor cost effective enough for the average home user.

Hard drives are the fundamental building blocks of every computer system so it's good to know that Seagate is confident in its Barracuda XT series; each drive is backed by 5 year warranty! That's commitment. Whatever type of PC you're building, the 2TB Seagate Barracuda XT is a worthwhile hard drive to consider.
