Samsung 9-Series NP900X4C-A02 15.1-inch Ultrabook Laptop Review

Samsung 9-Series NP900X4C-A02 15.1-inch Ultrabook Laptop Review - PCSTATS
Abstract: Design wise, Samsung have done well by their 9-Series Ultrabook; the system is wrapped in dark cobalt blue aluminum chassis that adopts many of the design elements of an Apple Macbook Air, yet posses the large screen size of a MacBook Pro (albeit with better hardware) and a sticker prices that won't cause heart failure.

Notebook Benchmarks: MobileMark, Sysmark 2012, PCmark Vantage

Bapco MobileMark 2012 - Battery Life Tests Source: Bapco

MobileMark 2012 is BAPCo's latest revision of their laptop battery testing suite. It tests battery life under a variety of situations including wireless Internet usage. Battery life is recorded in minutes for each test. The test was conducted with the screen at default brightness

Samsung's NP900X4C-A02 ultrabook laptop uses an internal 62Wh Li-ion battery pack that cannot be swapped out by the user or upgraded to a higher capacity unit -- hence battery longevity is understandably quite important. Notebooks in the Ultrabook category are designed with a host of energy conserving technologies which are slightly more expensive than standard 5lb laptops typically feature. For example, the display backlighting is done with energy efficient LEDs and the operating system is preset to dim the display after a only few minutes in inactivity. The hard drive, typically a big power drain, is replaced by a solid state drive and the notebook uses the latest generation mobile Intel Core i7 'ivy bridge' CPU which has a TDP of just 17W. In short, the deck is stacked in the "Ultrabooks' favor with respect to battery life.

Let's find out how long it actually stands up. First, recharging the 62Wh battery. In PCSTATS' tests, recharging from >10% to 50% battery strength took 1.5 hours time. It took 3.5 hours to completely recharge the spent battery to 100%.

Turning to Bapco's MobileMark 2012, the battery lasted 462 minutes, or 7 hours and 42 minutes with the wireless LAN connection active. During this battery run down test the 9-series notebook achieved an Office Productivity Performance Qualification Rating of 91.

Next up PCSTATS will benchmark the Samsung NP900X4C-A02 ultrabook with a range of productivity and content creation benchmarks. Let's find out how slow (or fast) this $1600 Ultrabook is.

SYSmark 2012 Source: Bapco

SYSmark 2012 is an application-based benchmark that reflects usage patterns of business users in the areas of office productivity, data/financial analysis, system management, media creation, 3D modeling and web development. SYSmark 2012 is a ground up development and features the latest and most popular applications from each of their respective fields.

Sysmark is a system-level benchmark composed of a dozen or so applications used in a real world context, with pauses and intensive periods over the course of several hours. An overall Sysmark 2012 score of 128 is equivalent to a desktop AMD FX-8150 system, which is pretty good where notebooks are concerned. Samsungs' NP900X4C-A02 notebook uses a 1.9GHz, quad-core Intel Core i7-3517U processor, integrated Intel HD 4000 graphics and is equipped with 8GB of memory.

PCMark Vantage results are next.

The latest version of the popular PCMark series, PCMark Vantage is an application-based benchmark and a premium tool for measuring overall PC performance. It uses portions of real applications instead of including whole applications or using specifically created code. This allows PCMark Vantage to maintain a smaller installation size while still giving accurate results.

PCMark Vantage thrives on computers with Solid State Drives, hence the Samsung NP900X4C-A02 ultrabook is head and shoulders above the Samsung R480 PCSTATS tested last year and it's relatively slow 5400RPM HDD. An overall score of 12477 for the 9-series notebook is again roughly equivalent to between a Core i5 2500K or AMD FX-8150 based desktop PC system. Considering this notebook is 15mm thick, that's exceptional performance in such a small package. The TV and Movies subtest score dips down because of Intel HD 4000 graphics core is not that powerful and allocates a chunk of system memory to itself.

Next up, 3DMark benchmarks for the Intel HD 4000 graphics core used with the NP900X4C-A02 ultrabook.
