Apacer 256MB PC-100 SDRAM Review

Apacer 256MB PC-100 SDRAM Review - PCSTATS
Abstract: For the performance user always having a top end system is important. I've always been very proud of the parts I used and in away it's no longer just a computer, it's my creation.

Quake III Arena Benchmarks

Quake III Arena: Fastest Setting Demo001
Setting: Frames: Time: FPS:
12 x 100 MHz CL3 1346 10.2 131.4
12 x 100 MHz CL2 1346 9.5 141.6
9 x 133 MHz CL3 1346 9.0 150.3
9 x 133 MHz CL2 1346 8.4 160.2
8 x 150 MHz CL3 1346 8.4 159.9
8 x 150 MHz CL2 1346 8.0 168.0

Quake III is know for loving high bus speeds, but as we can see here, it also likes to have good quality ram to play with too. It seems like you would get an extra 10 fps just by using CL2 RAM! Let's try another demo that's a little more stressful. It's nVidia's "nv15demo".

Quake II Arena: Fastest Setting nv15demo
Setting: Frames: Time: FPS:
12 x 100 MHz CL3 1471 35.2 41.8
12 x 100 MHz CL2 1471 33.2 44.3
9 x 133 MHz CL3 1471 30.7 47.9
9 x 133 MHz CL2 1471 29.4 50.0
8 x 150 MHz CL3 1471 28.9 50.9
8 x 150 MHz CL2 1471 27.8 52.9

Again, here you would get about 2-3 extra fps across the board when using CAS 2 ram. It's amazing that there is an 11.1 fps difference between the 12x100 CL3 setting to the 8x150 CL2!

Here's the question now… Does the performance of the ram justify its higher price? If you're not a power user, then I guess you would be happy with the generic PC-133 ram. It's cheap and does the job. For someone more like myself, these numbers would easily sway my decision when buying RAM. I mean, it was only $30CDN more per DIMM and the performance speaks for itself.

Remember this when buying anything, you get what you pay for!
