Show me the remote!

What would a TV be without a remote? How would anyone be able to channel surf? True to form, the SyncMaster 170MP comes equipped with an Infrared remote to control both the television display, and the on screen menu. The remote has a small (and overly stiff) cursor pad that is surrounded by some greenish plastic that makes you think it lights up, in the dark for example, but it doesn't. The remote is fairly standard, though it does have a few keys that link directly into the OSD menu capabilities.

It runs on two AAA's which are included. The only bad thing we can say about the 170MP revolves around the rather shallow range the remote has if you are less than three feet from the display. The sensor for the Infrared signals is at the top of the display and seems to be more finicky than it should be at close settings. Secondly, we found the cursor pad on the remote to be quite stiff. At times it was difficult to move through the menu selections without pressing very hard.

Resolution Settings

Resolution setting on a flat panel LCD display are always slightly different than that of their CRT relatives. With an LCD display, it is always best to operate it at the maximum resolution - in this case at a resolution of 1280x1024 pixels. With the computer set at this resolution there is no dithering effect on the image because each dot in the TFT panel accurately corresponds to the resolution setting. The full list of supported resolutions and frequencies are listed below:

The On Screen Display that Samsung use with the 170MP is simply the best we have every seen. I know it's hard to take much interest in these menus, but after looking at a billion blue-screen and yellow menus it was quite surprising to see an OSD of such quality as this...
