Overclocking and Benchmarks

Prolink has always produced some very overclocker friendly videocards and we were hoping that their GeForceFX 5600 Golden Limited 256MB followed suit.

With a stock clock speed of 325/600 the Prolink GeForceFX 5600 is already guaranteed to be faster than most of the other FX 5600's out there.

We began to raise the core speed slowly, which in fact started off from 325 MHz. Unfortunately, despite being built on the smaller 0.13 micron manufacturing process and having a large heatsink, we maxed out the core at 346 MHz. We're not really sure if that's a good clock speed or not as this is our first FX 5600 based videocard review to pass through the labs.

The memory seemed to a bit more into overclocking then the core, and starting of at 600 MHz it rose to a healthy 668 MHz with no artifacts. Anything higher and the 'nVIDIA overclocker' would claim that overclocking failed.

3DMark2001SE is the latest installment in the 3DMark series by MadOnion. By combining DirectX8 support with completely new graphics, it continues to provide good overall system benchmarks. 3DMark2001SE has been created in cooperation with the major 3D accelerator and processor manufacturers to provide a reliable set of diagnostic tools. The suite demonstrates 3D gaming performance by using real-world gaming technology to test a system's true performance abilities. Tests include: DirectX8 Vertex Shaders, Pixel Shaders and Point Sprites, DOT3 and Environment Mapped Bump Mapping, support for Full Scene Anti-aliasing and Texture Compression and two game tests using Ipion real-time physics.

Higher numbers denote better performance.

6. Prolink GeForceFX 5600 GLD LTD (346/668) 11714

Because the GeForceFX 5600 can only render four multitextures pixels in a single pass, it's slower then the older GeForce4 Ti4600 which can render eight.

This new accurate diagnostic tool, designed for DirectX9.0, provides you with all the information you need to make informed hardware assessments. Havok Total real-time physics library from Havok - these routines are used to accurately model the movements of objects due to forces, etc. FMOD sound library from Firelight Technologies - these are used for the various sound effects and routines used in the tests. Graphics adapter analysis software from Powerstrip of Entech Taiwan - this is used to correctly determine the speeds of the graphics processing and video memory chips, plus supply additional hardware information. Higher 3DMark03 scores denote better performance.

Being DirectX 9 compatible allows the Prolink GeForceFX 5600 to run the Mother Nature Demo which is why it scores higher then the Ti4600. Without that demo the cards perform about the same.
