 Benchmarks: QIII Arena, IL2 Sturmovik
Quake III Arena is a First Person
Shooter (FPS) that revolutionized gaming as we know it. Using multiple light
sources and having graphics textures that can fill videocards, even after 4
years it's still able to bring a cutting edge system to its knees. Old as it may be, the Quake III engine
is an integral component of several popular games. In its original form, Quake
III runs at speeds in excess of 300 frames per second. That is, unless you
enable anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering.
 At every
resolution between 1024x768 and 1600x1200, the GeForce 6800 Ultra finishes in a
commanding first place. The Radeon X800 XT follows, roughly 10 percent behind
nVidia's recent release. Meanwhile, the GeForce FX 5950 Ultra further
demonstrates its robust OpenGL ICD by beating out the Radeon 9800 XT as
well.
 Nvidia's
cards do very well with 4x anti-aliasing and 8x anisotropic filtering enabled.
The nVidia 6800 Ultra ranks in with the highest scores in all tests, and even
the older FX5950 Ultra easily beats out the Radeon 9800XT.
 IL2 is a
flight simulator that tends to run best under OpenGL. It doesn't include a
benchmarking mode, per se, so it is necessary to use Fraps for recording an
accurate average frame rate. In this case, we've played back TheBlackDeath from
five to forty five seconds.
 Although
simulators are traditionally very dependant on processor performance, the
nVidia GeForce 6800 Ultra manages to put quite a bit of distance between
itself and ATI's Radeon X800 XT, right up to 1600x1200. ATI's Radeon 9800 XT, on
the other hand, easily beats the GeForce FX 5950 Ultra.
The balance of power shifts as anti-aliasing and
anisotropic filtering are applied to each card. Both of ATI's products beat
their respective competition, except at 1024x768 where the 6800 Ultra comes in
way ahead. At 1600x1200, the Radeon X800 XT stays ahead of the Geforce 6800
Ultra by a good margin.
