Maximum Overclocking Chart and Conclusions

It's great to see how individual memory stacks up against one another under stock configuration, but we're also going to show how they stack up to each other when overclocked. The results are listed below for some of the recent memory to cross PCSTATS' test bench. All memory was tested at its most lax timings as well as its most aggressive. In terms of best overall overclocking performance, PCSTATS currently gives more weight to the combination of moderately high speeds and low latencies (2-2-2-5) than high speeds at the expense of latency timings.

For a 2GB memory kit the Patriot PDC2G4000ELK overclocks pretty well with loose timings, the 2GB Corsair TwinX2048-4000PT kit comes out just ahead though.

Summary: The New Minimum RAM Capacity is 2GB

At the moment 2GB of system memory might seem like a lot, but all indicators are that it's soon to be the norm. Microsoft Vista will be the catalyst for change, if certain game titles like Battlefield 2 haven't already convinced you it's the right way to go.

Users who do want 2GB of system memory will be happy to know that they do not have to sacrifice much speed for the increased memory capacity. There are quite a few 2GB high speed memory kits available, and the latest set from Patriot Memory we tested in this review is certainly quick.

The 2GB Patriot PDC2G4000ELK memory kit is designed to run at 250 MHz with 2.5-4-4-7 memory timings which is similar to most other PC4000 DDR memory kits currently available. With a retail price of $274 CDN ($240 USD, £135 GBP), the Patriot PDC2G4000ELK memory is fairly priced, backed by a lifetime warranty and covered with decent tech support.

The Patriot Memory PDC2G4000ELK modules come with preinstalled heatspreaders that ran cool most of the time. Overclocking warmed them up nicely, and we were able to push speeds up to 276 MHz with stock CAS latency timings. The modules we tested didn't like running with too tight timings... but they were still quick on the mark in most benchmarks. The Patriot PDC2G4000ELK memory kept up with previously tested 2GB memory kits like the OCZ PC4000 Gold and Corsair TwinX2048-4000PT well enough, so while the PDC2G4000ELK modules are not earth shattering they're still pretty solid in their own right.
