Overclocking a preoverclocked card

Overclocking Results:
stock overclocked
gpu (core) speed: 520 mhz 561 mhz
memory speed: 1440 mhz 1510 mhz
if you're new to Overclocking and not sure what to do, check out these two excellent Guides for some pointers:
Overclocking the CPU and Memory
Overclocking the Videocard

The Asus EN7900GT TOP/2DHT/256M/A comes factory overclocked to 520 MHz core and 1.44 GHz memory. This is up from 450 MHz core/1.3 GHz memory on stock GeForce 7900GT videocards. That is already a pretty healthy overclock on both the core and memory, but let's see how much further it can go....

Starting with the core first, its speed was increased in 3-5 MHz intervals. The 'G71' core didn't play well with Coolbits and often complained about the videocard being overclocked too high. After using my personal voodoo, and chanting "core overclock be good!" several times, the GeForce 7900GT core settled on a top speed of 561 MHz. Anything higher and Coolbits simply wouldn't allow it. It's a shame because the 'G71' core felt like it had more speed in it. Oh well, next up is the 256MB of GDDR3 memory.

Like the core, the Geforce 7900GT's GDDR3 memory is already pretty heavily overclocked running at 1.44 GHz. Going up at in 6-10 MHz intervals, the memory was able to crack the 1.5 GHz barrier but did not go much past that. The top speed was 1.51 GHz. Considering a stock GeForce 7900GT's memory runs at 1.3 GHz though, and that the Asus videocard is already running 1.44 GHz, that's not a bad memory overclock either.

The GeForce 7900GT core and 256MB of GDDR3 memory did not have any issues running at their respective maximum speeds. At stock speeds the Asus EN7900GT TOP/2DHT/256M/A is already a pretty fast videocard but when overclocked blows the doors off everything else except the GeForce 7900GTX. As you're just about to see, this makes quite a nice impact in the gaming benchmarks.

experts tip: uninstalling drivers for coolbits

for some reason, when the coolbits registry hack is entered in to the windows registry the nvidia overclocking plane still does not appear. if this happens to you, instead of rummaging through the registry the best thing to do is to uninstall the drivers completely then reinstall. please note that reinstalling drivers on top of the installed set often does not fix this issue, drivers need to be completely removed from the computer first. after that's done, install the Coolbits registry hack and overclocking will be available again.
