Motherboard Benchmarks - Quake 4

ID Software Quake 4 1.3

Source: id Software

Quake 4 is the latest shooter from ID and is based on the Doom 3 engine. Tweaked to for more eye candy, Quake 4 promises to be tougher on videocards and systems than its predecessor was. Quake 4 also does not have a 60 fps limiter like Doom 3, with the Ultra setting, graphic textures can surpass the 500MB mark! Each test is run three times and with the third run being recorded.

In the final test of the day, the MSI 975X Platinum performs very well and is tied for top spot among all the Intel Core 2 Duo motherboards PCSTATS has tested so far.

Conclusions: 975X and Core 2 Duo Mix Fast

This fall has been a wild ride for technology, and 2006 is going out with a bang just in time for Microsoft's upcoming Vista operating system. If you plan on upgrading to the Microsoft's latest and most intensive OS you'll probably have to upgrade your computer too. Depending on how old your current PC is, that "upgrade" could range from a couple sticks of memory to a totally new.... everything.

If you are going to upgrade or buy a new computer system soon, it will probably be something based on Intel's Core 2 Duo, or perhaps the AMD Athlon64 X2. The Core 2 Duo is clearly the most well rounded alternative at this moment, and presumably so until the summer of 2007. There are plenty of motherboards on the market which support the socket 775 Intel Core 2 Duo processors - yet as we've seen here MSI's 975X Platinum is has top of the line performance and great features for a decent price tag.

Retailing for $192 CDN ($170 US, £89 GBP), the MSI 975X Platinum is an aggressively priced Intel 975X motherboard. Onboard goodies include an Intel Gigabit NIC, a 7.1 channel Intel Azalia High Definition audio controller, IEEE 1394 and an additional Serial ATA II/IDE RAID controller. Even with the relatively high level of integration, there is lots of expansion space.

In terms of performance.... well you saw that yourself. The MSI 975X Platinum was quick in virtually every benchmark; from SYSMark 2004 to PCMark05, Super Pi and of course gaming (3DMark05/06, FarCry and Doom 3). In every test the MSI 975X Platinum competed for top spot. The MSI 975X Platinum motherboard was pretty good at overclocking, hitting a maximum speed of 360 MHz FSB in our tests. MSI has put together a competitive package here with the 975X Platinum motherboard, it's not just a full featured, it's fast and has a flair for the wild side. At a price that doesn't break the bank, the MSI 975X Platinum should definitely be one of the boards you consider for your wow-this-is-what-Windows-Vista-does-to-my-PC-youch!! system upgrade!
