Overclocking is alive and well! PCSTATS has all the details
you need to see at a glance to know how the various videocards tested perform
relative to each other. The chart we've compiled below lists the highest
overclocked core and memory clock speeds we were able to achieve while
maintaining 100% stability. Results are grouped by GPU class, and ranked by
highest memory overclock to lowest.
The Palit
8800GT Super+ 1GB ships from the factory at stock GPU and memory speeds - a
modest 600MHz and 1800MHz respectively. Overclocking was a bit of a challenge,
but in the end PCSTATS was able to overclock the Palit 8800GT Super+'s 1GB of
GDDR3 memory to 1930MHz and its nVidia 8800GT processor to about 750MHz.
The Geforce 8800GT with 1GB
memory
An extra 512MB helps out the
Palit
8800GT Super+ 1GB in a couple of the benchmarks we threw at it today, but that
extra memory also makes overclocking more of a challenge. While somewhat of a
trade off, the performance boost 1GB of memory provides is worth it compared to
vanilla Geforce 8800GT videocard solutions.
Palit have selected a large blue aluminum heatsink for
the 8800GT Super+ 1GB that looks similar to the old Thermaltake Orb CPU coolers.
The heatsink is bulky, so the videocard occupies dual slots. The 70mm fan is PWM
controlled, but when it rotates at full speed the videocard can get rather loud.
During testing the heatsink got pretty warm, so we know it's working, it's just
not as elegant as the low profile reference heatsink shipped with most Geforce
8800GTs.
Mainstream users will find the Palit 8800GT Super+ 1GB
capable for moderate to heavy gaming. The card retails for $290 CDN ($290 USD, £150 GBP) and comes
with a full copy of the game Tomb Raider
Anniversary, and cables to output video over composite/component or HDMI.
Far too many manufacturers neglect to include the simple HDMI-to-DVI adaptor, so
we're pleased Palit hasn't make that mistake too. Overclocking was somewhat of a
mixed bag, but PCSTATS was still able to push the Geforce 8800GT to 750MHz GPU.
1930MHz memory.
Compared to the range of Geforce 8800GT videocards
PCSTATS has previously tested, the Palit 8800GT Super+ 1GB does hold an edge in
several game benchmarks thanks to the extra memory. If you desire good game
scores and and like what you see here, you should be quite happy with what the
Palit 8800GT Super+ 1GB has to offer.
