Vantec ION 400W VAN-400B Power Supply

Buying a poor quality power supply for a computer is often like buying cheap tires for a car. They'll work for a while, probably not very well, and you're only a small steep away from total disaster. When visiting the local computer stores in my area I always cringe when I hear "just give me the cheapest power supply you have" coming from a customer.

If there's one thing I've learned from both testing and troubleshooting PC's, it's that you should never buy a poor quality power supply for your computer. All too often, I've seen what happens when a poor quality powersupply fails, taking several hundred, or thousand dollars worth of high-end hardware down with it. Just recently one of my friends had everything inside his system completely fried when a generic 400W PSU popped a capacitor. The only items salvageable were the videocard, soundcard and memory modules.

Vantec pleasantly surprised us when they entered into the power supply market with the release of their aluminum-encased Stealth power supplies last year. Not only were the Stealth PSU's powerful, they also provided extremely stable voltages. I should know, we've been using the Vantec 470W Stealth PSU to test hardware here for over a year now! The one problem with the Vantec Stealth power supply, other than a fan that stalls if left in the "quiet" mode for too long, is that they are priced such that they have become an item for enthusiasts almost exclusively.

While wooing the enthusiast market is great, no company want to miss out on the much larger mainstream computer markets. The Stealth PSU's were great, but a the more economical ION line cut the price down to more reasonable levels. With the ION, Vantec stripped away the fancy aluminum housing, and WTX compatibility. Viola, the economically priced 400W ION VAN-400B was born!

Vantec ION VAN-400B

Includes:

Power Cable, Zip Ties, 2x Molex to Serial ATA Power connectors, Users Manual, Screws.

The ION VAN-400B is fully ATX12V compatible and also includes an auxiliary line so it's fully compatible with every type of ATX motherboard on the market. The ten molex and two floppy drive power connectors should keep even the most enthusiast users happy.

The main ATX, ATX12V and auxiliary power cables are 60 cm long while the molex/floppy cables are 60cm to the first molex connector. The metal contact pins are all gold plated which will prevent corrosion in the long term from degrading the flow of electricity.

[Update: While the fan speed control button on the rear of Vantec's powersupplies is novel, it doesn't work reliably with the fans used to cool the powersupply. On each of the Vantec powersupplies we have tested continually for several months, the fan eventually stalls if the fan speed button is set to the *quietest* setting. This leads to the powersupply overheating, and that nice smell of burning electronics. Thus far, we have *not* had a Vantec powersupplies fail because of this, ie. blow up, melt, burn down, or shut off, but they do increase in temperature quite dramatically. Therefore, we *do not recommend* that you use the quietest speed setting, instead use the medium or full speed option.]
