Maximum DDR Overclocking Tests

It's great to see how individual memory stacks up against one another under stock configuration, but we're also going to show how they stack up to each other when overclocked. The results are listed below for some of the recent memory to cross our test bench. The higher the speed, the better.

Don't let the relatively low memory clock speeds fool you, the Mushkin PC3200 LII V2 DDR is much faster than it looks. Remember the memory timings it's using are 2-2-2-5, which means when programs that do not need a lot of bandwidth access system memory, it is faster than memory using high latency. The Mushkin DDR RAM performs exactly as the other memory based on the new Samsung DRAM.

Nice Stuff From Mushkin!

As a performance enthusiast I'm extremely happy to see that high speed, high latency memory is fading into the background. I wouldn't use memory that type of stuff even if it can run at 300 MHz. The timings trade off is simply not worth it since real world performance is lower. Applications used by the average person/gamer require quick access between the memory and system, rather than a large pool of bandwidth. For more insight into this, see PCStats Memory Bandwidth vs. Latency Timings article.

With Mushkin shipping around 1.5 to 2 million memory modules a month, you know they're the real deal and not some upstart with a lot of flash. Combine that with an excellent service record and awesome warranty, and you don't need to worry about the memory in your system.

Today we were fortunate enough to test out a set of Mushkin's latest PC3200 LII V2 DDR memory. It is based on the Samsung's new K4H560838F-TCCD DRAM. By default the PC3200 LII V2 memory modules run at 200 MHz, while maintaining 2-2-2-5 memory timings at 2.6V. Mushkin wrap the sleek black DIMM's with black aluminum heatspreaders, which help protect the memory from physical damage.

Performance of the Mushkin PC3200 LII V2 memory was excellent on both Athlon64 and Pentium 4 test systems. The Mushkin RAM performed on par at stock speeds with the Corsair TwinX-3200XL PRO and OCZ PC3200 Platinum Limited Edition memory. Both are among the fastest low latency DDR memory modules available. While maintaining 2-2-2-5 timings, the PC3200 LII V2 was overclockable to 226 MHz on the Athlon64 system, and 237 MHz on the Intel rig!

With a retail price of $400 CDN ($320 US) for 1GB (2 x 512MB) of this Mushkin PC3200 LII V2 DDR, the memory is expensive, but you're pretty much guaranteed to get the best!
