Maximum DDR2 Overclock Speeds, Timings and Conclusions

It's great to see how individual memory stacks up against the competition under stock configurations, but we're also going to show how it compares when overclocked. With performance in mind, we're going to compare the maximum overclocked results of the various DDR2 DIMMs we've tested in the past and are listed below. Remember, just because memory is clocked fast doesn't mean it's the best thing for a computer. Timings are also important and getting the right ratio of both is the key!

While we don't have much to compare the PQI Turbo PQI24500-1GDB against, I think it's safe to say that the memory does pretty well for itself when overclocked.

Very fast DDR-2!

Back in 200-2001 things were very exciting in the memory world, after all the Goliath like Intel was backing the radical RDRAM architecture while AMD was pushing DDR. In what was one of the biggest upsets in computer history, DDR memory prevailed as the desktop memory standard and in general has served users very well the last few years. Now near the end of its life, DDR-2 takes over from where DDR has left off and ironically it's early champion is Intel.

PQI's Turbo PQI25400-1GBDB is rated to run at 667 MHz by default, while maintaining 4-4-4-12 memory timings with a voltage of 1.8V. The performance of these modules was very good compared to the other test modules, but because of the higher latencies the PQI Turbo PQI25400-1GDB wasn't commanding a lead in most benchmarks.

Realistically, the differences where small enough that you wouldn't notice the differences in a game, or using an application. In terms of overclocking, we were able to push PQI's Turbo PQI25400-1GDB memory to 660 MHz, at 1.8V. This is very good for DDR-2, but 7 MHz lower than its official rated speed of 667MHz. Of course I don't believe that this was the fault of the memory. It's much more likely that the motherboard was maxing out.

With a retail price of $422 CDN ($345 US), PQI's Turbo PQI25400-1GDB is actually quite affordable considering it's DDR-2 RAM. If you've jumped on the bandwagon and are looking for some decent DDR-2 memory, it may be time to consider a set of PQI Turbo PQI25400-1GDB.
