Max Memory Overclocking Chart and Conclusions

It's great to see how individual memory stacks up against the competition under stock configurations, but we're also going to show how it compares when overclocked. With performance in mind, we're going to compare the maximum overclocked results of the various DDR2/3 memory modules PCSTATS has tested in the past which are listed below. Remember, just because memory is clocked fast doesn't mean it's the best thing for a computer. Timings are also important, and getting the right ratio of both is the real key to performance based overclocking!

The OCZ PC2-9200 FlexXLC Edition memory comes in the middle of the pack, when it comes to overclocking with tight and with lax timings. Overall the OCZ PC2-9200 FlexXLC Edition memory is a good performer.

OCZ brings watercooling support to memory by default

With memory manufacturers installing larger and larger heatsinks, it was only a matter of time before watercooling compatible memory was released. OCZ have raised the bar for all other enthusiast brands.

From a practical stand point, is watercooling really necessary for DDR2 system memory?

No, but does it hurt to watercool memory? Again the answer is no.

For computer hardware geeks out there, watercooling memory allows them to pursue their love of computers further, and let's be frank, a rig with watercooled memory is too cool!

The 2GB set of OCZ PC2-9200 FlexXLC Edition memory PCSTATS tested for you today is pretty darn sweet. By default the memory is rated to run at speeds up to DDR2-1150, while keeping 5-5-5-15 timings with a voltage 2.3V.

The memory comes from OCZ with preinstalled with waterblocks, which can be used, or not. Even though OCZ's PC2-9200 FlexXLC Edition is targeting the high end crowd, the memory is pretty aggressively priced at $267 CDN ($252 USD, £125 GBP).

Of course if you don't have a watercooling setup, the OCZ PC2-9200 FlexXLC Edition memory does have fins for air cooling. OCZ did not do a very thorough job applying the heatsink/waterblock onto the BGA DRAM modules, once side doesn't make very good contact with the DDR2 DRAM!

Now that DDR3 memory is available, it does make purchasing memory a bit more difficult of a quandary for Intel users. DDR2 memory is perfectly sufficient if you're not planning on upgrading to quad core processor. On the other hand, if you want to be one of the first kids on the block with a quad core system, waiting for DDR3 may be a good idea as that is the only memory standard which satisfies those memory bandwidth demands.

In terms of performance the 2GB OCZ PC2-9200 FlexXLC Edition memory kit performed on par with the other high performance memory kits that PCSTATS has tested recently. When it comes to overclockling, the OCZ PC2-9200 FlexXLC Edition posted pretty respectable results - 1066 MHz with tight 4-4-4-12 timings, and 1220 MHz with 5-5-5-18 timings. Both results put the OCZ memory near the middle of all DDR2 memory tested.

The OCZ PC2-9200 FlexXLC Edition memory kit is certainly novel thanks to its ability to support watercooling by default, but that feature is definitely not a necessary item. If you need a new set of memory the OCZ PC2-9200 FlexXLC Edition memory kit is not a bad deal, you get good performance at a decent price.
