Multiple videocards demand +1000W Power?

The power demands of a modern gaming computer with multiple videocards is pretty substantial. With both nVIDIA and AMD touting tri and quad videocard solutions for gamers, power supplies are surging past 1 Kilowatt - a previously unimaginable threshold for desktop PCs.

COOLMAX's latest enthusiast grade power supply has all the right stuff; 80 PLUS, nVIDIA SLI and AMD CrossFire certification, multiple 12V rails, quad SLI power, etc.

COOLMAX's GREEN POWER CUQ-1200B PSU hang with the high end crowd, retailing for about $286 CDN ($300 US, £145 GBP) .

The CUQ-1200B power supply is long unit best suited for tower chassis, but its modular cable system should help keep clutter down. There are plenty of cables for one, two, or four videocards.

PCSTATS was pleased to see is that the COOLMAX GREEN POWER CUQ-1200B is ATX 2.2 compatible, meaning it supports two eight pin PCI Express x16 power connectors. Team that up with the four six pin PCI Express x16 power connectors and you've got yourself a power supply that's ready for some serious high end gaming!

The COOLMAX GREEN POWER CUQ-1200B is equipped with two fans, a 135mm and 80mm, yet the power supply is still very quiet under power. We also appreciate the smudge resistant grey brushed finish, it's glossy but looks very smart.

The voltages remained rock solid during testing, but we have to mention that our current 120W dummy test load does not have enough resistance to push this 1200W power supply far. Thus we were not able to accurately test COOLMAX's claim at 80 PLUS compliance. Still, we really like what what the COOLMAX GREEN POWER CUQ-1200B has to offer. It's a bit pricey, but certainly stands tall as a high end contender.
