Overclocking, Power Draw, Test System Specs

Here's how the Gigabyte GV-R477D5-512H-B videocard stacks up for power consumption in real life against a couple different graphics cards. PCSTATS measures total system power draw and compares that in 3D loaded (max value recorded in 3DMark06) and idle states (at Windows desktop). The power supply used in each test is an A-PFC compliant PC Power and Cooling 750W model.

Obviously, two Gigabyte GV-R477D5-512H-B videocards draw more power than a single videocard. However, even in the case of Crossfire'd Radeon HD 4770's, the pair draw less power than other SLI and dual-gpu video card. I suppose this is the benefit of a 40nm GPU, improved power efficiency!

Next up PCSTATS overclocks a pair of Radeon HD 4770s!

if you're new to Overclocking and not sure what to do, check out these two excellent Guides for some pointers:
Overclocking the CPU and Memory
Overclocking the Videocard

The Gigabyte GV-R477DR5-512H-B videocard ships with its ATI 'RV740' GPU clocked at 750MHz and the 512MB of onboard GDDR5 memory running at 800MHz, or effectively quad-pumped to 3.2GHz.

As always, PCSTATS overclocked the videocard through ATI's Catalyst Control Center using ATI Overdrive. The fan was set to run at 100% from the start and PCSTATS started with the GPU first, pausing to test the results with a quick 3D benchmark before continuing. We take note of any stability problems or artifacts, then list the maximum stable and artifact-free overclocked speed the videocard achieves. We'll be using ASUS' P5E3 Premium Intel X48 motherboard for these overclocking tests, along with a nice set of Patriot DDR3-1866 low latency memory modules.

Given the ease with which PCSTATS overclocked ASUS' EAH4770 videocard in our last review, for the Gigabyte HD 4770 we decided to cut to the chase. The memory and GPU clock speeds were dialed up as high as possible from the get-go. The Radeon HD 4770 handled 830MHz GPU / 850MHz memory as if it was nothing, 3DMark06 passed without any artifacts or instability.

As you expect, the overclocking situation was dito for the two Radeon HD 4770 videocards running in Crossfire. Both graphics cards overclocked to 830MHz GPU / 850MHz memory without a problem. This is one of the nice things about mainstream videocards, there's often a lot of headroom built in so you can boost the speed of the videocard without much risk. Might as well enjoy all that Free performance in the games!

To show you exactly what kind of performance this translates to, PCSTATS will be including overclocked Crossfire benchmark results for 3DMark06 and 3DMark Vantage.

Prelude to Benchmarks

The details of how the Gigabyte GV-R477DR5-512H-B videocard was configured for benchmarking; the specific hardware, software drivers, operating system and benchmark versions are indicated below. All benchmarks for the videocard were run in Windows Vista Ultimate, the reference video cards were tested in both Windows XP and Vista for the DX10 benchmarks.

PCSTATS is in the process of making the transition to a Windows Vista and Intel CPU test platform, so keep this in mind as you scan the benchmark results. In the second column are the general specs for the reference cards this ATI Radeon HD 4770 videocard is compared against.

Benchmark results are organized by GPU manufacturer first (AMD/ATI or nVidia), then by GPU generation, and then by GPU class (high end, mainstream, value). This approach provides a clearer view of how performance can differ from generation to generation, and class to previous generation. The product being tested is marked with the red colour bar.
