Intel's Demos McAfee Social Protection, A Condom For Your Digital Life
     Thu, Sep 13 2012 | 3:27P | Software | PermaLink
Posted by: STAFF
During the Day Two keynote address at the Intel Developer Forum, Renee James, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Intel’s Software & Services Group, talked about software development, security and services in an “age of transparent computing”. Much of the talk was geared towards software developers and the desire to code once and deploy across a variety of hardware platforms, which of course lead to a long discussion on the benefits and virtues HTML 5, which Intel obviously is firmly behind. During the security-centric portion of the keynote, however, Renee brought out a rep from Intel’s McAfee division to show off a beta release of the McAfee Social Protection app, which they called a "condom for your digital life"...

Intel Graphics Mature Greatly With The Linux Kernel
     Mon, Sep 03 2012 | 9:39A | Software | PermaLink
Posted by: STAFF
As a prelude to the forthcoming Windows 7 vs. OS X 10.8 vs. Ubuntu Linux benchmarks that are looking at how Intel OpenGL graphics compare between the operating systems, here`s some Intel Sandy Bridge benchmarks that provide a historical look at how the Linux kernel -- and upgrades to the Intel Direct Rendering Manager driver within the kernel -- have matured over time. On average, the Intel Linux graphics performance is up about 30% over the course of the past few kernel releases this year."

Internet Explorer 10 RTM Benchmarked
     Sat, Aug 25 2012 | 10:39A | Software | PermaLink
Posted by: STAFF
During the last ten years, Internet Explorer (IE) has completely lost its reputation - mostly thanks to its poor performance, stability issues, security vulnerabilities and a lack of functionality. IE became a joke among PC users. But luckily for its fans, Microsoft hasn`t given up hope. In fact, it improved things drastically in the last three versions. However, IE9`s performance is still remarkably poor compared to the other web browsers. This brings us to Internet Explorer 10. Now if you may or may not know, Microsoft has completed its development and is included with Windows 8 RTM (coming soon to Windows 7 PCs). Since Windows 8 RTM is now available on MSDN and TechNet, we were able to benchmark IE10. Has IE gotten any faster? Read on to find out."

Linux Is A Lemon On The Retina MacBook Pro
     Thu, Aug 16 2012 | 12:59P | Software | PermaLink
Posted by: STAFF
If you are planning to buy one of the new Apple MacBook Pro notebooks with a Retina Display for use under Linux, hold off on your purchase. Running the Retina MacBook Pro with Linux isn`t a trouble-free experience and after using even the latest development code and jumping through various hoops, Linux on the latest Apple hardware is still less than an ideal experience. Linux support will improve for the Retina MacBook Pro in the coming months, but it`s not likely to see any proper out of the box experience until next year."

     Wed, Aug 15 2012 | 4:09P | Software | PermaLink
Posted by: STAFF
Despite all the rumors of Apple discontinuing Safari for Windows, the web browser market is still on fire. New versions and updates are being released almost on a weekly basis. In fact, with so many options available - it would be nice to know which one is the fastest. Unfortunately, it`s been a while since someone came up with a performance roundup. So we spent the last couple of days benchmarking the most popular web browsers and even some of less popular ones (a total of 13 in number). Is Google Chrome still on top? Read on to find out."

Hands On: VideoLAN Releases Beta VLC for Android App
     Mon, Jul 16 2012 | 9:52A | Software | PermaLink
Posted by: STAFF
Speaking of playback; for the video testing, I tried the VLC for Android application with a 720p video recorded using the Samsung Infuse 4G`s own camera as well as a DVD rip of the movie Live Free or Die Hard. The DVD rip was encoded using the H.264 codec in an MP4 container with a bitrate of about 1500 kbps. After enabling hardware acceleration, the VLC app was able to play back the DVD rip acceptably (there were a few artifacts and audio issues but it was watchable)."

[Tech ARP] Slow Menus In Adobe Photoshop CS6 Rev. 2.0
     Sun, Jul 15 2012 | 11:59A | Software | PermaLink
Posted by: STAFF
Those who have tried Adobe`s Photoshop CS6 beta or the recently-released final version may come across a really odd problem - very unresponsive menus. These symptoms will only occur when there`s an open file, and it seems to only affect notebooks with switchable graphics (Intel HD Graphics paired with an AMD or NVIDIA graphics card). Perhaps that`s the reason why there has been so little noise about this problem online. We think we figured out what was causing this problem... *In this update, we added our experience upgrading the Intel HD Graphics driver, and the effect it had on this problem.*"
