Pulse-Eight Internal HDMI CEC Adapter Review @MissingRemote
     Mon, Oct 29 2012 | 12:04P | Home Theatre | PermaLink
Posted by: STAFF
In an HDMI A/V environment, Consumer Electronics Control (CEC) is the glue that ties components together into a cohesive unit--able to be controlled by a single remote without the hassle, or expense, of a normal universal as well as removing infrareds (IR) line-of-site requirement for playback devices. Where there can be problems with the protocol, most often the root cause is linked to the unfortunate fact that CEC works [best] when every component on the HDMI bus supports it which until recently has left home theater PC (HTPC) users out in the cold. Coming to market with an HDMI+USB dongle, Pulse-Eight brought this segment into the modern age, but with the form factor trade-offs demanded of an external adapter and lacking of wake-from S5 (soft- off) some compromise was still required. Fortunately for those with Intel Media Series motherboards offering an HTPC_HEADER like the DH61AG or DH77DF, Pulse-Eight is back with an internal solution able to correct both of these gaps. *"

Asrock VisionX 321B
     Wed, Oct 24 2012 | 9:03A | Home Theatre | PermaLink
Posted by: STAFF
The Asrock VisionX 321B is an awesome little HTPC that packs a serious punch. Actually we really shouldn’t label the VisionX as a HTPC as it is so much more than that. Whereas other models such as the VisionHT rely on integrated graphic solutions, such as the Intel HD Graphics 4000, the VisionX employs a far more powerful solution making it a very capable gaming machine.

55LM960V review: fully-featured Smart TV
     Mon, Oct 22 2012 | 9:01A | Home Theatre | PermaLink
Posted by: STAFF
LG’s 55LM960V is a very attractive and thin TV with a different-looking base, and the image-quality is outstanding. The contrast was a little bit of a let-down, considering that the nano full LED technology has more potential. The colour rendering is very good, and LG's passive 3D technology works well, preferable over active 3D because it's easier on the eyes. A nice library of 3D content is included even. The TV is complete in terms of features, and the Smart TV functionality is very comprehensive.

LG 55LM760S TV review: higher mid-range TV
     Fri, Oct 19 2012 | 5:07P | Home Theatre | PermaLink
Posted by: STAFF
The LG LM760S has almost all of the features of the high-end LM960V, but is slightly more affordable. We prefer the design of this model with its rounded base compared to the more expensive one. In terms of features, LG's televisions are great, with things like Smart TV, the ability to order on-demand films and passive 3D.

Panasonic TX-L55DT50 review: Panasonic's LCD
     Tue, Oct 16 2012 | 9:00A | Home Theatre | PermaLink
Posted by: STAFF
Until recently Panasonic was the only manufacturer to still solely use plasma technology for its large high-end televisions. LCD panels from this brand were only available in smaller TVs. Plasma is still one of Panasonic's mainstays, but now a complete range of larger high-end LCD TVs is also available. Hardware.Info tested the 55-inch TX-L55DT50E.

Acer Iconia Tab A700 with HD 1080p Display Review
     Sun, Oct 14 2012 | 4:00P | Home Theatre | PermaLink
Posted by: STAFF
Apple upped the ante in the tablet market with its Retina display found in the third-generation iPad, which offers a resolution of 2048x1536. Since then, some Android tablet manufacturers have followed suit by increasing screen resolution and providing a better display overall. Acer's latest Iconia Tab A700 is one such tablet that aims to deliver a more vibrant display than the majority of Android-based tablets on the market today. The Iconia Tab A700 features a 1080p Full HD Display with a 1920 x 1200 resolution, in addition to a NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-plus-one-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 32GB of onboard flash storage, a microSD card slot as well as an HDMI port…

Mini-ITX Gaming HTPC: building the ultimate powerhouse - XSReviews
     Mon, Oct 08 2012 | 11:06A | Home Theatre | PermaLink
Posted by: STAFF
What`s good about a gaming rig is that it usually functions as a HTPC pretty much perfectly. The downside is the size, heat production and possibly noise issues of a gaming rig in comparison to an HTPC; so I set out on a journey to bring the best of both worlds together! Today we`re going to take a look at a great mini-ITX HTPC-gaming build. It took quite a while to find the right components, activate sponsors and get all the parts shipped and put together, but the end result is one of the finest mini PC`s you`ve ever seen! A link to the article would be much appreciated."

Xtreamer Prodigy Black 3D Media Player
     Wed, Oct 03 2012 | 9:00A | Home Theatre | PermaLink
Posted by: STAFF
One of the things i really like about the electronics industry is that no matter how many manufacturers there are at this exact moment in time there will always be more around each day that goes by and so although I’ve been testing hardware (standalone) media players for the past 5 years (or so) i have yet to cooperate with all of them something which some of you keep reminding me from time to time (as you should). Xtreamer may not be the most famous hardware media player manufacturer (A.C.Ryan is and unfortunately they are not doing well so that means little nowadays) but they've been around almost from the very beginning (i think they were established in late 2008/ early 2009) and they are known to manufacture cost-effective yet feature-rich solutions. So since their latest media player & streamer is called the Prodigy Black and has been around for over a year we thought it was about time that we took it out for a test drive.

SoundScience Halo 6 LED Bias HDTV Blacklight Kit by Antec Review @MissingRemote
     Mon, Oct 01 2012 | 1:47A | Home Theatre | PermaLink
Posted by: STAFF
When Philips first introduced their Ambilight technology for their television sets they were all the rage--fantastic concept that actually works to help minimize the strain on your eyes while watching the television, but who wants to buy a brand new set just for a cool technology. Luckily the folks at Antec have got you covered...sort of. The soundscience halo 6 LED bias lighting kit is designed for monitors up to 24? in size on your desk. So what does a website focused on home theaters do, we grabbed two of these from our friends at Antec and tested them on a 50? plasma television. Let?s see how it matches up to the real deal. *"

Hydra 31 HDMI Cable Switch Review @ TestFreaks
     Tue, Sep 25 2012 | 9:10A | Home Theatre | PermaLink
Posted by: STAFF
HDTVs and home theaters system are great, most of us have one and mostly everything these days is HDMI which is nice as its just one simple connection for everything. What isnt nice is the fact that you can quickly run out of HDMI connections on your TV, I know I did so I run a few through the home theater stereo system and I found thats still not enough for everything I have. I found myself having to manually unplug and then plug in the device I want to use at times or use an alternate connection method like composite for said devices. Up for review today I have the Sewell Hydra 31 HDMI Cable Switch that allow you to connect three HDMI devices to one HDMI connection on your HDTV or theater system. The Hydra consists of four cables, three input and one output with a very small push button switch in the middle and the best part is that it doesnt need an external power source. So read on to learn more "

Review: pivos AIOS HD Media Center
     Sat, Sep 15 2012 | 9:00A | Home Theatre | PermaLink
Posted by: STAFF
It is no secret that I am an HTPC enthusiast. However, not all applications require the use of a PC to be the main ingredient in a home theater setup. In some cases, as much as I would like to admit otherwise, a media streamer can do the job just as well, if not better. To fulfill this need, a slew of manufacturers, from Logitech, WD, Linksys, etc, have created devices that do just this and adding to this list is Pivos. Pivos, a company that promises to change your mind about quality, functionality, and price. Enter the Pivos AIOS HD Media Center.

Posted by: STAFF
Buyers looking for a new HDTV who don`t want to spend a ton of money may want to check out the Panasonic TC-P50U50 50 plasma TV. It offers fabulous image quality, deep black levels and an SD card slot. It does lack things like 3D and Internet-enabled applications, which have become fairly mainstream."
