IDF Day 1: Haswell Live Graphics Demo
     Thu, Sep 13 2012 | 3:26P | Tradeshows / Events | PermaLink
Posted by: STAFF
Intel’s Dadi (David) Perlmutter, General Manager Intel Architecture Group and Chief Product Officer, opened up the 2012 Intel Developers Forum by reflecting back on the significance of this day, the eleventh anniversary of the attacks on 9/11. Today, however, also marks the fifteenth anniversary of IDF, so Dadi ultimately moved on to a quick overview of the many advances and innovations that have taken place at Intel since the event began in 1997. Perlmutter showed off a Medfield SoC alongside a Xeon Phi, along with a number of Intel Atom and Core powered Windows 8 tablets and Ultrabooks, but he finished with a couple of live demos showing the company’s upcoming Haswell-based 4th Gen Core Processors in action…

Ah, IDF – the Intel Developer Forum. Almost every year–while I sit in slightly uncomfortable chairs and stare at outdated and color washed projector screens–information is passed on about Intel's future architectures, products and technologies. Last year we learned the final details about Ivy Bridge, and this year we are getting the first details about Haswell, which is the first architecture designed by Intel from the ground up for servers, desktops, laptops, tablets and phones. Quote: "Haswell (at least in this iteration) will be available in various different configurations including 2-4 processing cores, three different levels of graphics subsystem, differing idle and active power levels, interconnects, and platforms. This will greatly increase the power and performance ranges of Haswell compared to Ivy Bridge (and Sandy Bridge) and is enabled by the system agent that acts as the intermediary between all of the components on the SoC."

Traditionally at IDF, Intel's Advanced Technology Zone is where all the cool stuff happens. Whether it be public demos setup for hands-on opportunities with next generation Intel technologies or backroom sessions with Intel Advanced Engineering and Marketing teams showing early engineering samples to members of the press, this place is where we get up close and personal with many of the unveilings that Intel rolls out over the course of the conference. Yesterday we spent time with Intel's Performance Engineering and Benchmark teams discussing what encompasses a satisfying user experience on the ultra-mobile platforms that are all the rage in the market today. On display were a number Windows 8-driven tablets powered by Intel...

Intel's Demos McAfee Social Protection, A Condom For Your Digital Life
     Thu, Sep 13 2012 | 9:00A | Tradeshows / Events | PermaLink
Posted by: STAFF
During the Day Two keynote address at the Intel Developer Forum, Renee James, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Intel’s Software & Services Group, talked about software development, security and services in an “age of transparent computing”. Much of the talk was geared towards software developers and the desire to code once and deploy across a variety of hardware platforms, which of course lead to a long discussion on the benefits and virtues HTML 5, which Intel obviously is firmly behind. During the security-centric portion of the keynote, however, Renee brought out a rep from Intel’s McAfee division to show off a beta release of the McAfee Social Protection app, which they called a "condom for your digital life"...

Systemax Ohio Factory Tour @ LanOC Reviews
     Wed, Aug 29 2012 | 4:10P | Tradeshows / Events | PermaLink
Posted by: STAFF
You know typically being based out of Ohio doesnt have a lot of upsides. We are normally extremely far away from just about anyone in the industry. There is one exception to this though. You guys may have heard of a company by the name of Systemax, if not you have heard of one of their subsidiaries, Tiger Direct. Systemaxs Ohio factory literally is a giant facility in the middle of cornfields and small towns. I dont think you could get a more stereotypical representation of what Ohio is to most people. That being said, I jumped at the chance to finally get a peek inside of this random factory that I had come across in the past out in the country."

With another Quakecon under my belt, I like to reflect on many of the sights and sounds I heard and experienced from throughout the BYOC area, exhibit hall, and main stage presentations. John Carmack did a fantastic job with his keynote address this year and I was able to actually understand most of what he was talking about until he started doing a deep-dive discussion about virtual reality technology."

Computex 2012: The Big Picture @ TechwareLabs
     Wed, Jul 18 2012 | 11:59A | Tradeshows / Events | PermaLink
Posted by: STAFF
For years Computex has been one of the premier ICT (Information, Communication, Technology) trade shows and has done a superior job in promotion as well as ROI. With the completion of Computex 2012 I want to focus on the big picture for you. Computex has tradionally been a platform for product launches and business acquisition, but what about this year? Has Computex 2012 brought with it the same ROI for exhibitors, visitors, and buyers worldwide? The answer is a resounding yes, but the way in which it has done so has formed a trendline over the past few years which is as interesting as it is disturbing."
