X2: The Threat Source: Egosoft

A completely rewritten 3D engine based on DirectX8 encompasses many visual effects such as volumetric Nebulae (gas clouds) that have a real impact in the game (you can hide in them) and many new engine, shield, weapon and explosion effects. Objects cast real dynamic 3D shadows! Dynamic DP3 bump mapping allows a previously unseen level of detail.

We saw some strange results with our X2 benchmark... SLI on the GV-3D1 card would not work at 1024x768 but worked fine (and performed well) at 1600x1200; also the dual MSI NX6600GT-TD128E cards showed no SLI advantage at the lower resolution but got a respectable boost at 1600x1200. Some additional driver tuning is required, we suspect. Otherwise, all the cards posted the expected results. The Radeon X700 Pro is again outclassed by the 6600GT chips, and even ASUS' boosted 6600 core card managed to beat it.

Unreal Tournament 2003 is the sequel to 1999's multiple 'Game of the Year' award winner. It uses the very latest Unreal Engine technology - where graphics, sound and game play are taken beyond the bleeding edge. Unreal Tournament 2003 employs the use of Vertex as well as Pixel Shaders and it's recommended that you use a DirectX 8 videocard to get the most out of the game.

SLI proves to be of little benefit in this system oriented test, except in the high-resolution Botmatch benchmark, where it helps our two test cards break away from the pack impressively. The 6600GT cards again outperform their Radeon counterpart, while the MSI AGP-based cards suffer.
