DX10 Motherboard IGP Benchmarks: Call of Juarez, Crysis

Call of Juarez

Source: Techland

While Call of Juarez pulls off all the classic FPS mechanisms with aplomb, it also features interesting variations that give it the air and feel of a true Western movie. The player has the genuine impression of being a pistol-packing hero in an age when armed confrontation was the daily grind for many adventurers. The Developers have incorporated a classic shooting system as well as two extra game modes.

Crysis 1.2

Source: Electronic Arts

Crysis is a science fiction first-person shooter developed by Crytek. Crysis uses Microsoft's new API, DirectX 10 for graphics rendering, and includes the new engine—the CryEngine 2—that is the successor to Far Cry's CryEngine. CryEngine 2 is among the first engines to use the DirectX 10 framework of Windows Vista, but can also run using DirectX 9, both on Vista and Windows XP.

Crysis is still a powerhouse when it comes to graphics, and when paired up with the Geforce GTS 250 the Gigabyte GA-MA785G-UD3H does a good job of keeping pace. The Radeon HD 4200, if it isn't obvious, finds itself overwhelmed by the demands of Crysis.

It's time for some final thoughts on the Gigabyte GA-MA785G-UD3H motherboard! AMD 785G and DDR2 worthwhile?

Gigabyte's GA-MA785G-UD3H is a versatile motherboard for 1-2 year old AMD PCs in need of a quick upgrade.

New PC builders with dreams of a Phenom II or even Athlon II would be better served by an AMD 785G platform and DDR3 memory. With support for AMD Sempron, Athlon and Phenom processors in socket AM2/AM2+ flavours, the Gigabyte GA-MA785G-UD3H allows migration to a great integrated chipset with your existing collection of dual channel DDR2 memory... It's just that there's no point in buying into DDR2 modules now if you're building a budget PC or HTPC from scratch.

Care of the ATI Radeon HD 4200 come display outputs in Analog, DVI and HDMI formats on the GA-MA785G-UD3H motherboard. Monitors, LCD displays and even big screen HD TVs will connect to this board with ease. Best of all, AMD 785G's integrated Radeon HD 4200 makes watching High Definition content on the computer a smoother process even if a lowly Athlon II CPU is used.

In PCSTATS tests the Radeon HD 4200 IGP barely handled FPS 3D gaming by itself, but excelled against regular desktop work, HD playback from the hard drive and Blu-ray playback. If you need a PC for 3D gaming, install a PCI Express x16 videocard such as the Radeon HD 4770. That model isn't too costly, and the benefits are dramatic compared to gaming on an integrated graphics processor. Hybrid Crossfire's impact on 3D gaming is underwhelming, so PCSTATS doesn't recommend that path. However, CrossfireX works wonderfully with two decent videocards.

Looking over the benchmarks I think it's worth pointing out that the IGP performance difference between AMD 785G motherboards with 128MB of sideport memory and those without is minimal, but not insignificant.

It was only in certain synthetic benchmarks that the lack of sideport memory, and to some extent the greater memory bandwidth of the sideport equipped DDR3-based platforms, produced real advantages for the DDR3-AMD 785G motherboards. As I said before, for 1-2 year old AMD PCs in need of a quick upgrade the GA-MA785G-UD3H motherboard is a fine option for less than $100. If you're building an AMD 785G based PC from scratch, stick to DDR3 memory and a socket AM3 processor.

Overclocking results were interesting, the bus speed rose to a modest 265MHz and the Radeon HD 4200 overclocked by a hefty 275MHz above stock. The impact of IGP overclocking is modest, but based on PCSTATS tests the extra heat may lead to system instability. The passive northbridge heatsink Gigabyte are using with the AMD785G is fine for stock speeds, but most definitely needs airflow if you have plans for IGP overclocking.

The bottom line is that the Gigabyte GA-MA785G-UD3H motherboard is a cost-effective AMD 785G platform, in particular for existing PCs powered by a socket AM2 AMD processor. If your current AMD chip is socket AM2, you should consider a board like Gigabyte GA-MA785G-UD3H as a quick way to extend your initial PC investment a little further.
