DX10 Motherboard IGP Benchmarks: Call of Juarez, Crysis

Call of Juarez

Source: Techland

While Call of Juarez pulls off all the classic FPS mechanisms with aplomb, it also features interesting variations that give it the air and feel of a true Western movie. The player has the genuine impression of being a pistol-packing hero in an age when armed confrontation was the daily grind for many adventurers. The Developers have incorporated a classic shooting system as well as two extra game modes.

A faster videocard and processor makes it difficult to compare the performance of the MSI 785GM-E65 and the Asus M4A785TD-V EVO to the other motherboards on this list. Running the IGP by itself reveals decent scores for the AMD 785G chipset and the Radeon HD 4200, but it still can't compete with the faster-clocked Radeon HD 3300 IGP. Again though, none of these IGPs are capable of running this game at playable settings, even at the lowest resolutions.

Crysis 1.2

Source: Electronic Arts

Crysis is a science fiction first-person shooter developed by Crytek. Crysis uses Microsoft's new API, DirectX 10 for graphics rendering, and includes the new engine—the CryEngine 2—that is the successor to Far Cry's CryEngine. CryEngine 2 is among the first engines to use the DirectX 10 framework of Windows Vista, but can also run using DirectX 9, both on Vista and Windows XP.

While the AMD 790GX motherboards managed to do quite well in Crysis at low quality settings, the AMD 785G chipsets are clearly not cut out for playing Crysis without the help of a graphics card. Things get worse at higher resolutions, where every IGP becomes completely unplayable.

However when paired up with a decent $150 videocard (like the Geforce GTS 250), scores shoot up into the playable range, and suddenly Crysis goes from slide show to a gorgeous FPS shooter. This has been a pretty exhaustive article, but we've almost gotten to the bottom of AMD's new 785G chipset. We're going to put everything together on the next page...
